Just took delivery of 4020 and after initial run-in took it to bush hogg the outside edge of our field. When we returned we couldn't get the PTO to disengage. It appears to be running at 1/2 to 1/4 speed but does not stop. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Sounds like the pto clutch is not fully disengaging. Get it fixed in a hurry or you will burn up your clutch pack and be in for a tractor split. Should be just a simple adjustment. If you have a FEL it will be a bit tougher job and may need to be removed.

Need clarification please - is it the rotary cutter that's still rotating at 1/2 to 1/4 speed? or has the PTO driveline been removed and it's the tractor PTO stub (spline) that still turning? If the former, Chris is right about a simple clutch linkage adjustment. If the latter, that's normal parasitic movement. With the engine NOT RUNNING - if you can rotate the stub by hand, it's disengaged.

Right now the cutter is still engaged. We will be removing it this afternoon and check for movement by hand (with the engine NOT RUNNING).

With the bush hog removed and the tractor running and the pto disengaged try using a piece of 2x4 to try to stop the stub from turning. Make the piece of wood about 3' long or so and see if you can stop it with one end against the draw bar and the other end in you hand with the pto stub somewhere between. Be very careful around the pto shaft. Make sure you have a buddy spot you and no lose clothing that could get caught. PTO shafts are the quickest way to get killed around a tractor.

If the PTO lever is in neutral, the clutch should not have an effect. The blade carrier on a brush mower will run it for a long...long time (there is no brake on these PTOs). Does the mower start without the lever being in gear when you start the tractor? If you start the tractor with the mower attached, and the PTO in neutral, and your foot on the clutch all the way does the mower start to turn? does it start to turn when you let the foot off the clutch even with the lever in neutral? If you step on the clutch fully with the PTO lever engaged, does the mower start to coast to a stop?

Bluechip I have a simialr problem-I have a Farm Pro 2425 and the PTO will not stop running. Lever has three setting 500-N-1000, but when I put in N the neutral doesnt enagage. Any ideas?

I think I know what you mean, but putting the lever into the N position effectively disengages the PTO stub. There is a natural parasitic action that causes the stub to rotate slowly even when disengaged. To make sure this isn't actually what you're seeing, disengage the PTO with both levers; push the ENG/DIE lever to DIE, and the PTO speed select lever to N. Then put the tractor in gear and shut down the engine.

Dismount and go behind the tractor. Grab the PTO stub and try to turn it. If it turns by hand, it's disengaged. At that point you can simply ignore the parasitic revolutions. But if it won't turn at all, we can move on to troubleshooting.
