Hey guys I have a 2006 Farm Pro 2430 with the TY395i engine. It overheats when I use the bush hog or finish mower in heavy grass.
1. I removed the thermostat first.
2. Replaced the radiator cap.
2. I then replaced the factory temp gauge/sending unit with one that reads Fahrenheit. Both show about the same temps, 180 degrees within about 15 minutes of heavy mowing. If I keep mowing the temp will continue to rise, I haven't let it get past 210 degrees.

It will push about a half gallon of coolant from the radiator overflow when the temp rises.

Doesn't seem to be building excessive water pressure like a blown head gasket would do.

If I am just using the front end loader or other light work the temp will stay in the 160 degree range, again this is with thermostat removed.

The passages in the radiator look clean. Engine start easily and sounds good with no excessive smoking from the exhaust.

I have noticed that at idle or when revving the engine, there is no noticeable water flow in the top of the radiator.

Could I have a defective water pump? Is this a common failure on these engines? At $170 for the water pump I would hate to replace and not solve the problem.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I have never had one with bad water pump, you should see water circulating in rad somewhat
look at your hoses well, some came from factory with bad kinks in bends, will close off when hot
also add an overflow bottle to side of rad, ketchup bottle works well
make sure rad clean, rinse with hose from fan side
also some came with battery blocking alot of rad,you can make a box to lower it
also make sure fan belt tight

if you run it half full of water you can hear it flowing after thermostat opens

Try cleaning your radiator. You should be able to see light through all of it. Put a furnace filter in front of the radiator to catch the chaff, and put the thermostat back in - it also helps to cool the engine by keeping the coolant in the radiator longer. Also, install a coolant recovery system so you don't loose coolant, and it keeps air out of your cooling system.

Hope you aren't using straight water in the cooling system.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. I will try all of them.
And yes, I am running 50/50 antifreeze and distilled water.

I agree with Bob on cleaning the radiator. Used to be a common post in these forums of users bush hogging and the engine overheating. Just because you can hose water or blow air through the radiator does not make in clear. The common advice in old threads was to remove the radiator, soak it in a tub of water to loosen the baked on crud then wash out with a hose or compressed air gun. You will be amazed at what can come out. (guess who's been there and done that) Then as Bob suggested fit a filter to the front of the radiator

These critters are pretty sensitive regarding the position of the cooling fan relative to the fan shroud. You do have a fan shroud, right? Make sure the fan blades are revolving completely inside the shroud, adjust radiator/shroud location as necessary to conform. This way you can more easily tell if a fan blade is out of alignment relative to the others too. Might have to do a little straightening.

Including all suggestions above, there is the BATTERY position in front of radiator that blocks a lot of it on many models, moving that away or at least an inch in front of radiator helps.

next thing to look at is to make sure belt is tight so slippage on fan is not an issue.

then get the thermostat BACK INSTALLED having fluid speed thru does not give it time to warm up cold eng and cool off hot fluid in radiator. I had similar issues and until the battery was moved and radiator was cleaned out of the machine nothing mattered when pushing a PTO power thru it. I posed pics on my radiator & battery box mods in here last year when I was off work.

pic of mod rad/btry box w new battery

clearance I got

more pics there with some details on the pics as to what I did (descriptions)

Are you sure of the engine model? Maybe a 385? bjr
