So I just split my tractor today to address the leaking gasket between the sump and flywheel housing. It went pretty well, minus a few minor hurdles. Ive got it stripped down to the gasket, there was basically nothing left of it! A few of the larger bolts holding the flywheel housing to the engine block were pretty loose, one I could remove by hand, three others barely needed any torque to move! I'm hoping to get it cleaned up, install a new gasket and get it back together tomorrow. A couple questions as I tackle this re-assembly, mostly regarding proper fluids to replace and how to go about that:

- what type of fluid do I use for the power steering? It was a creamy filthy fluid that came out when I cracked the banjo fitting at the pump, cant tell what is supposed to be in there!

- I mistakenly removed the back square cover off the transfer case for the 4wd trying to figure out how to remove the driveshaft. It leaked about a quart of fluid, is this the same used in the transmission? Where do I fill this transfer case, there was a drain plug at the bottom but i cant find a fill plug...

- When I cracked the hydraulic lines there was little fluid that drained (1/2 gallon?!?), and i noticed the fluid level was off the stick when I parked it to start the dis-assembly, it seems like the major leak is from the pto output shaft. Is there a oil ring or gasket behind that plate which needs replacing?

- What torque should the flywheel housing bolts be set to? there was two different sizes, six 10mm and another six were 16mm I believe.

Thanks yall, Im excited to have this thing up and running soon. I just bought a 4' JD tiller and spring is breaking fast!

1. The power steering uses hydraulic fluid pumped forward from the sump beneath the seat. That's where the filter resides as well. If it's crappy looking at the front of the tractor, you know it's no better in the rear. I'll bet the filter has collapsed as well. Put one on your shopping list. Get some kerosene too, as you must flush all that gunk out before pouring fresh AW32 hydraulic fluid back into the system
2. Gear boxes use gear oil, usually 80W90. This includes both front and rear differential, transmission, mid-connect box (shuttle or creeper). The transfer case is gravity fed from the (open) bottom of the mid-connect box.
3. I wouldn't be surprised if your "major leak from the pto" isn't actually hydraulic fluid (or gunk) leaked down from above. The hydraulic vent/fill plug is behind the seat, almost directly above the PTO shaft.
4. Yes, there is a gasket between the bell housing and the mid-connect box, and another between the transfer case and the mid-connect. Both are small enough to cut yourself from a sheet of bulk oil/gasket resistant gasket material (available at most truck/auto parts stores).
5. The flywheel bolts get 55 Nm (+/-5). If you don't have a metric torque wrench, that's ~41 lb-ft (+/-4)

This flywheel housing gasket leak is not an uncommon problem with the 200 Series Jinma, OE bolts are too soft. The threads will have stretched on those that you removed, and should not be reused. Replace them with similar sized bolt with metric hardness grade 8.8 (equivalent to a Grade 5 SAE bolt).

huh, im pretty sure this tractor has an independent pump and fluid reservoir for the power steering, i will have to retrace the pipes but it seemed like they just ran from the reservoir and pump mounted in front of the starter, up to the steering column. I will double check. Also, the power steering fluid was much dirtier then the fluid that ran out of the hydraulic lines at down by the belly of the machine. That stuff was a bit thinner and burnt golden in color...Either way, hydraulic fluid for the ps? All-right.
ok so around 41 ft lbs for the flywheel bolts, how about those bolts holding the flywheel housing to the engine block?
Also, I saw the leak at the pto shaft weeping, definitely coming from behind that plate.
Thanks for the help Greg! I appreciate the response : )

Depending on which engine you have some of the 254/284 tractors had dual pumps. Most of those had the Quanchai engine or some had the Laidong KM385 engine. It's pretty easy to tell, you will also have a small hydraulic fluid reservoir in front of the radiator. There is a oil seal in the PTO Shaft housing FB 35 x 55 x 10 Oil seal. I would replace all the bolts holding the Flywheel housing to the engine block with Grade 8 and use Locktite on the bolts. If you don't have one of our splined clutch alignment tools you should get one it will make re-assembly a lot easier, we also have the oil seal and any other parts you may need

What I did when I split my 204, only two things I can add, I was able to use longer bolts (just make sure they don't bottom out) and run a tap thru the threaded hole to clean the crap out.....Mike
