As for grinding 300mm/12" trees , it's just a sales gimmick they ALL use . The only way that can happen is if the machine is fitted with a tilting hitch or the tree is only short . If not , it is impossible to cut one off that thick because it wont bend over like a thin tree so the cutters can get onto it . The body of the mulcher will come against the trunk before the cutters can .

I really don't want to have to run more hydraulic lines to work the door , has anyone replaced the hydraulic ram with a Linear Actuator ? I was thinking of fitting a trim pump out of a boat on the mulcher to operate the ram . That way i only need to run wires down the boom to run the pump .

Any suggestions ?

Iron Horse there is a seller of grapples for FEL that uses an electric set up to get more sales because the user only has to run fused wires to the battery to operate the hydraulic ram at the bucket. I saw it on E-bay is all I remember. Check with Northern Hydraulics, etc/.

Thanks Gale , I did think about an electro solenoid but i'm not sure how it would go tapping into 7/8" lines with the engine and pumps at full noise without using pressure and flow limiters . I'll ask "Gold finger" the owner of the hydraulic shop here . It will be here tomorrow .

Ironhorse, my Cimaf head has a trap door as well and it is actuated via solenoids mounted on the valvebody on the hydraulic cutter. My guess is there may be a few boss on the hyd motor valve body that are plugged and some corresponding ports to use for the door. On the cimaf and all the exc mulching heads I have seen, the teeth protrude past the frame of the mulcher, im sure yours does too. You may have to shave a bit up and down the tree to make it all the way through but it can be done. And finally yes I have seen some heads with a sort of "Wrist-O-Twist set up to tilt the head, I have also seen where the head can rotate. Check out JPV Mulching he's got a tilt on his, plus over 300 Hp..

The body of the mulcher will come against the trunk before the cutters can .

I worded that badly . The cutters are proud of the body 3 inches or so , but to shave the tree up and down for 5 foot to allow the cutters to get through the tree would be hazardous as it could fall in any direction .

Thanks for the tip on the hydraulics , I will check it out as there may be somewhere I can tap into the motor block . It's a pity they don't just come plumbed with a solenoid ready for any excavator without all the extra valves and hoses we have to fit to make it work . Swapping between machines would be so much easier .

I had to use my truck to get it home today , I was thinking it would be OK on my car trailer , NOT A CHANCE . I didn't realise what a big lump they are , they don't skimp on the steel .

Even our Australian Red Gums are no match for it .

I ended up removing the front door completely , I tried it with the door open and closed and found that the size of the shredded timber was fine enough for the jobs I'm doing without it . It also exposes the cutter teeth a lot more .

It might just be an optical illusion, but one of those hydraulic hoses appears to be stretched to its max.

On an unrelated note, I was just wondering if a mulcher could be rigged up to a combine? It might just work.

Both hoses have large curves in them , it just looks straight as it is facing the camera .
I'm not sure I understand about the combine .
