Hey guys I'm looking to expand a pasture a few acres for horses. I'm thinking about renting a mulcher to do this with. I would imagine though that I wouldn't get very good growth for a while with all the mulch covering the ground? I thought maybe I can go over the ground with my disc after I'm done mulching to mix in the soil. Is that even possible though, can I get deep enough with the mulcher to use a disc afterwards? Or are there any better methods to speed up growth? Thanks in advance.

Are we talking a mulching tillage tool for dirt or a mulching cutter for brush above the ground?
With the cutter you will still have stump and roots in the ground, from what I have seen afterwards just keep it mowed with a bushhog for a few years as the brush that was mulched will try and grow back. I would advice doing this for a few years before trying to use a disc on it.

If a mulching tillage attachment it will do everything a disc will do.

A client of mine has a very novel aproach to get pasture after mulching. I go through and do a rough cut after which he hand broadcasts grass seed. Then I do a finish cut over the area which then burys the seed in the mulch. Depending on seasons/rainfall etc he can have pasture in as little as 3 months. Its best to leave the mulch on the surface to help retain moisture and if its hill country to stop errsion,

After mulching, spread ammonia nitrate to burn the chips down faster and boot up the grass. Add lime to counter the acidity of the chips. My customers have had good results with this method suggested to me by my local ag extention agent.
