F725 gas gauge?

Anybody know how the gas gauge works on an F725?

When I got mine the gauge was just laying loose in the indentation of the tank. It has NO mechanical connection to anything. I put a bead of silicone around the edges and set it in place. The darn thing works somehow. It's a mystery to me how since it is not electric or connected to a float or anything.

Looked into it and found it is expensive (over $200) but also found a video that suggests it is just a compass..

Good find but doesn't explain how it moves the magnet in a semi circle. The $200 would be for the whole assembly, not just the gauge piece. I may have to pull the tank part out of my spare parts mower one day to look at it. I know it works and is dead on reliable except for the glue failing that holds it in. Looking at the parts diagram it just shows it as an assembly that screws on top of the tank but doesn't show anything going down in the tank. It must have a float on a spiral gear that rotates the magnet?

Mine was unreadable from the face being crystallized but the spare I had was clear. The spare was already loose in the hole or I would have taken the whole unit out. I just pried the old one out and glued the spare unit in the hole and boom it worked.
