Torn between a new F2690 and a used F3680. Not interested in tier4 systems. I looked at a used F3680 with very low hrs had just a little engine oil on the tip of the dipstick. No oil leaks or excessive smoke that I could see. Owner could not explain. Engine oil light works, but did not come on when running the engine. My question is, is this particular engine known for oil high consumption? Any owner comments greatly appreciated.
Thanks

has the machine been routinely serviced w/log? how many hrs on that oil? if excessive hrs, my experience is that some oil will be consumed over time (moisture) esp w/frequent short runs, etc.
would also be suspect that the owner was surprised oil was low. could be indicative of how he took care of machine.

if i were selling one, oil level would be one of the 1st things i'd check. always wise to err to caution until things check out. if you are really serious, have a compression check done @ dealer, you both split cost. best regards

I don't think there would be any reason to think that there is a problem based on one reading. Those engines are solid (as long as they weren't abused).

Hours and price would be my deciding factor in the story you presented. New has 0% financing and used doesn't so that needs to be factored in as part of the price aspect, especially if you plan to finance and is also a financial factor if you don't plan to finance..

My F3680 doesn't use oil for what it's worth. I bought low hours F3680 3 years ago and have zero regrets.

My thoughts exactly.

First thing is how much oil does or did it take to bring it to full? How much is that compared to the capacity of that engine? Right off that would not impress me with the tractor. As to log, know some people are great at them. I know some who right the date on the filters with marker or will scratch them on it. I use a time method on my machines and do not have any other "log". Mine all get oil changed at same time of the year with full filters. I do not run them enough they need changes more often than once per year. I do check my oil both engine and transmission on regular base.
Pull air filter...that would be easiest filter you can see whether service is done or not.
