It may be just my imagination but it seems that my F2400 is slower in reverse than it was before. Forward speed is fine. The reverse pedal goes to the floor as does the forward pedal so I don't think the arm slipped on the shaft. Any suggestions for things to look for?

Update: I talked to the dealer and he suggeted it could be a worn cross arm bushing - apparently quite a common problem on these machines. The other thing he suggested was a restricted filter. I checked the cross arm and all seemed to be OK, no significant play in the bushings. I checked the fluid level in the tranny and it was low. It has been a while since I changed the filters so I decided to change both the hydraulic and HST filters. Did that, filled it up with oil and no change in performance. I looked in my manual and the max speed in reverse is about half that of forward so that may be the answer. It just seems slower than before.

If you are interested and have the original maximum speed specification, a long tape measure, a stop watch or watch with a second hand and a calculator, you can find out for sure.

Measure off some distance like 528 Feet (1/10 Mile). A longer distance will lead you to less error. It can be shorter too, if you don't have the straight space available. In any case, Miles = Feet / 5280

Get in your tractor with the stopwatch and come up to the starting line at your maximum reverse speed and start the stopwatch. (Maybe someone else can operate the stopwatch)

Travel the distance you measured and stop the watch.

Your speed in miles per hour is:

Velocity (mph) = Distance (Miles) / Time (Hours)

or, since your stopwatch would be measuring seconds.

Velocity (mph) = Distance (Miles) / (Time (Seconds) X 3600)
(Since there are 3600 seconds in one hour)

Keep it under 55! /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif Be safe.

Good idea Redding. The Gas company just put a service line down our street and in the process marked the pavement every 50 metres. When the snow is gone I should be able to get at least a 250m run which will give me a pretty good test track.

Thanks for the idea.

Just looked at your personal info. you put here. Looks like the math won't be an issue!

I surely wish that the US would go metric. We made a weak attempt in the 70's, I think. Maybe if we did, that Mars probe wouldn't have missed.....

Plus, I hear the metric six-pack has 10 beers in it. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Your linkage may be getting a little worn. Most Kubota HST’s have a screw that controls how far the reverse pedal can be pressed. Check it out you may only need a little adjustment of this screw.

the f2400 has quite a bit of linkage, if you will lift the seat and have someone rock the pedel back and forth gently ,you will see all the movement, and yes it does disapear on the left side of the hydraulic filter, and the piece that actually moves the swash plates on the outside of the trans will wear the linkage rod nearly into and will egg shape the hole it sets in also ,along with all the lost motion you see(it all adds up). i did not know the hours on your machine but you can run a pressure check on the charge pump and the hudraulic circuit and if all pressure is withen fact spec. you most likely have only worn linkage, and if you don't have one have your dealer order a service manual for one because in the dealership where i work ,we are seeing less and less of the old f's and before you know it the only ones that know anything about them will be the old dinosaurs like me , and we are about to forget all we ever knew about these to make room for the zd machines, at least where i live in NC...good luck

Thanks for the info mr fixit.

I don't know how many hours my machine has on it, but probably at least 6000. The hour meter was broken at 4500 hours when I got it. The seller replaced it before I bought it but who knows how many hours happened in between. I know what you mean about the amount of linkage and I will check it out carefully. Also thanks for the tip about the service manual.
