Can someone tell me where the fuel filter is located on a 2001 F150 with the big V8?

The owners manual tells me to go see my dealer and provides no pictures. I would like to think I am capable of replacing the filter myself.

I will go & buy a service manual, but was hoping to replace the filter this morning.

Thanks

My 1985 Nissan truck takes 5 minutes to change the fuel filter.

I got on a F150 web page and it looks like a big deal to change the filter. The fuel line is highly pressurized and I need a specialty tool which I do not have. I guess I will have the dealer take care of it.

The filter must still be working ok, the fuel runs through the engine like there is no tomorrow /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif.

Check inside the drivers side frame rail. The tool to change it should be about $10.00. It will be pressurised, I've been told to remove the gas cap prior to changing, but I don't think that can relieve the pressure. Wear goggles!

Driver's side frame rail under the cab. Auto parts stores sell the tool, it's a very common item. Look for the ones made of plastic that sell for a couple of bucks, you don't really need the more expensive ones made of metal.

The fuel line is pressurized and fuel will spray out when you disconnect the fitting. Just wrap a rag around it before you do so. Also, change it when the engine is relatively cold. Less fuel will spray out.

Most places will charge about a half hour to replace it. For that price you can buy the tool and a couple of filters.

It's a good practice to replace your fuel filter every 30,000 miles on a gas engine.

There's a purge on the fuel rail under the hood. Looks like a tire valvestem under the cap. Take a little screwdriver and wrap a rag over it and the stem. Purge the system. It can be done as you say but I find that spraying fuel under the vehicle always ends up in my face. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

JD4610 is correct about the filters location and the quick disconnect tool you will need to seperate the filter from the fuel lines on the truck. Under the hood on the driver's side fender well in the electrics box is the relay for the fuel pump (look in owner's manual for exact relay). Remove relay, crank engine over (may start and die or not start at all) and then go about removing the fuel filter and there should be no fuel spray under pressure, might just dribble out.
