I'm new here and just started reading reading reading reading & reading. I'm soon likely in the market for a small tractor. since safety is "my thing" I'll throw out a plug for eye protection:

you can dance with a wooden leg and eat with false teeth, but you cannot see through a glass eye......so wear you eye protection.....

life is full of choices....

kind regards!

Safety glasses have saved me a few times. But sometimes I don't wear them because they are so uncomfortable. So I went to an optometrist and got two pairs of real nice safety glasses with safety frames and side shields. They are so comfortable you forget you have them on.
Now I don't have an excuse to not wear them.

I agree. Eye safety is a must. Since I've been hit a few times near or in the eye even while wearing glasses, I have started using a welding hood with the face shield flipepd up, or a set of gas torch goggles with no shade in it.

Another note. to those of us that wear glasses. Spend a few bucks more and get upgraded ansi-spec lenses if they are available for your glasses. It's better than nothing if you get into a situation without real safety glasses. My prescrip lenses have stopped all sorts of things from flying into my eyes when i was in situations where i would not have been wearing safety glasses.. etc.

If it weren't for my safety glasses, I wouldn't be reading this now.

I switched to a face shield and prefer it to safety glasses. Its much lighter weight than a welding helmet, but has a similar headband and hinge system. It flips up so its out of the way when I don't need it, but is always handy when I do need it because its sitting on top of my head.

Mine is a UVEX brand, picked it up from Gemplers.com last year for about $40. It has an anti-fog coating too. They have a cheaper version without anti-fog, I'm not sure that the fog coating is necessary?

Afternoon Bob,
That face shield is an excellent idea ! Im constantly getting little bits of wood dust in my eye even though I wear safety glasses when running my table saw. And all you really need to do is flip that whole assembly up when your not using it !;)

I just spent the last two weeks without the use of my right eye as the result of a ruptured brake line and inadequate personal protective equipment.

I was bleeding the brakes on our back hoe when a brake line ruptured Dot 3 under high pressure hit my eye glasses knocking them loose and depositing the remainder of the Dot three directly into my right eye.

A trip to the emergency room, two more trips to the eye doctor and two weeks with the eye covered gave me plenty of time to think of what was going to be used for eye protection next time.

Fortunately I have been given another chance as the vision is now nearly fully restored.
