I just saw this tid bit.

"...Occupational exposure to mineral oils, particularly hydraulic and motor oils, may increase risk for rheumatoid arthritis in certain genetically susceptible individuals."
Link To Study Summary

I think the key words are occupational meaning lots of exposure. May means MAY. Genetically susceptible means those with certain genes. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't you love these studies! Probably govt funded (AKA over funded) too. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I, and most anyone I know, are quite certain that motor or hydraulic oil isn't good for 'em. And I am quite sure it MAY cause a whole host of ailments. We don't need to waste time and money studying what ailments...just avoid, if at all possible and if an occupational hazard, take precautions to limit exposure.
BTW, I heard that the CDC and NIH stated that living is hazardous to your health and, in fact, It MAY be fatal...where do they come up with this stuff!?! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Dan - my Brother-in-law was a top notch equipment operator, welder, mechanic, etc.. all around great guy - frequently washed his hands in gas, diesel or mineral spirits. He passed away fairly young (68) after having kidney failure and 3 years of dialysis. We suspect that the years of washing the grease, etc. off his hands with what we now know are toxic materials, resulted in his problems and early death - extremely sad, but a lesson to all.

Dad passed away just before his 92 birthday, and spent 40 years as a diesel mechanical engineer. Was in diesel fuel and gas and engine oil all the time building, fabricating, testing, and tearing down engines beginning in '36.

I think these are the 'hypes' that keep some people busy, some worried, and a lot of others employed spending Govt. grant monies.
But just my own opinion. I am more concerned about the money expended, than in the "MAY" increase Arthritis.

Exposer to oil doesn't spook me in the least. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Brother in-law. Heavy equipment mechanic. Sick as heck. Started using gloves when washing parts in solvent etc. Not sick anymore, you draw your own conclusion. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Time and time again in the past I've gotten sick as a dog from working in oil and hydraulic fluids too much. One time it was so bad that it felt like the worst hangover I ever had - and it lasted for a couple of days. I swear I thought I was going to die. I try to be much more careful these days and either wear gloves or wash my hands and arms regularly during the work - and haven't gotten really sick since. Every once in a while I get so into the work that I forget some of the safety measures, and get a little bit sick every time.

Oil containers here carry warnings that repeated exposure to oil can cause skin cancer

Dad was chief PhD chemical engineer for Shell Oil, died of leukemia @ 55 from exposure to benzene..... it was a long slow drawn out death of extreme suffering from the pain of the cancerous bone marrow.

Good luck wallowing in toxic petro wastes.... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

"Exposure" and "wallowing" are two different things.

Just don't cotton to the 'hype' that is thrown out trying to put 'fear' into things we don't need to be 'feared' of.

And to the 'warnings' on the barrels that are there to 'protect' against any and all possibilities (lawyers again), its pretty common knowledge that anything in excess can be shown to be detrimental.

I learned the other day that someone is 'allergic' to the fumes from oil or gas combustion. Some people are sensitive to some things, and that is unfortunate.

We are getting to be a society of people who 'need' to find someone or something to blame for every little thing. I got a chuckle out of the 'cause of death' of an 84 year old man was attributed to West Nile virus. May have been, but also may have been he was wearing down from a few other things too.

Good friend of mine has a 44 yr old son, dying of lung cancer that is now in his bones. Never smoked, always healthy life, didn't work outside a bank, hunted, fished, raising a family. Now they are running around trying to find out what in his life caused this. Looking for radon, high power lines, etc. Its sad but if he had smoked, they would look no further.

Sorry to ramble...........and I don't disagree with the title of this thread, that "Exposure to oil MAY increase risk for Arthritis" because it MAY. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
