Explain '540 PTO' for my J-D 1080

I bought a new Caroni, 72" flail mower ...and the explicit instructions are to run it at '540 min.'. I have run a Furgerson 40 and this 1080 for 25yrs.. but never thought about '540'. My tach has a attachment symbol with brackets showing RPM ranges... in fact, two of them?! I run a finishing mower, bush hog (headed to Craigslist) and tiller off the back but never thought much about it, besides using the power required at the time. Can someone perhaps enlighten me? Pretty typical to have PTO running at 540 rpm for attachments these days. Maybe you have a choice, and you can select the 540 choice.
Can you tell us what you think your options are to select between the two ranges?

Been.. I don't have a clue?! All I know is that I need to pick lower gear and add RPMs to get thru some of the weeds I cut.... I have no idea why there are two 'bracketed images of the PTO output shaft' within the tachometer. ..the second at a higher RPM. I'm at work and don't have a picture...

the second, higher speed, is usually for a 'mid mount pto' to power a belly mower or front blower.

Double check the model number, as 1080 doesn't show.. unless a typo or referencing the PTO rpm.

A pic of the PTO at the rear might help sort it out for you, as well as the pick of the images. Actual model number would help too.

Looks like I beat you in/out: 1963-66. I rode one of the last troop ships to Bremerhaven. The entire enlistment was a real eye opener on humanity for a young guy from the midwest. I still have my Meal Card. It's stamped: "Allergic to ______." (Lifers written above the line) ..and a MIL vehicle license with no picture?! Cheers.

Is this a MF 1080 maybe? There doesn't appear to be any info on a JD 1080. If it is a MF 1080, 1718 Engine RPM is 540PTO, 2000 Engine is 1000PTO

Sorry BT and Bob ...more Senior Moments in the last year or so ..and unlike looking at my hands to remember right/left ..I'm at work so 'can't see the tractor. it's a 1070. A remarkably friendly/useful tool for someone who wrangles 25ac alone.

Given that, 540 on your PTO is about 2100 on the tach. In todays market this would be classified as a 540 PTO tractor.
