I know how that goes about, I got mistd by some of the stuff at the bar by an offduty security officer. He had been in the bar all night and was tasting the fire water and got out the pepper spray. and in the parking lot my friends designated driver pulled up with his German shepard it was barking and the officer was goona spray the dog, It missed the dog caught the wind and got me my friend and her driver. Thats some cruel stuff in the wrong hands. If I could have made it back to the restroom Id have flushed my head down the toilet to have gotten the burning to go away. I think he was charged with assault and lost his job. It caused my chest to and nasal pasages to burn like i was around a large fire.

I went throught the tear gas room in the army and have been maced three or four times since. Once, I did it myself. If you are going to get drunk and shoot roachs off a barroom restroom wall you need to make sure the little nozzle thingie is pointed in the right direction! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif It definitely affects people differently. Once, I was in a fight when we got doused, well, I've been doused a couple of times in a fight, this time was memorable. I snapped to what had happened in about two seconds, it was like "Oh, I know what this is" and I just backed off and headed into the Jack in the Box who's flower beds we had been tearing out and washed my face. The other guy totally blew it. He started screaming and running around rubbing his face, then he was flopping on the ground, then he got up and almost ran into traffic. I went in, washed my face and ran water in my eyes and then went back out and enjoyed the show. Now, you have to understand, I don't like it, it just doesn't instill panic in me. That stuff will clean out your sinuses better than a whole jar of Jalapeno peppers! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Junk I have kept one of these gadgets in my glove box of my car for years just in case. I have also wondered about how it would feel to be on the receiving end of a jolt. Thanks for saving me the personal experience, after reading your story there isn't any way i'm going to be a guinea pig now. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

A "Taser" is a specific type of non-lethal weapon, whose use has been restricted mainly to law enforcement and military until now. There is a "civilian" version being released in mid-September.

Since the Taser is not considered a "weapon," no CCW is needed. It fires from 15 feet away. And works to stun the attacker no matter where it hits on the body.

They are a bit pricey, but the company claims that out of many thousands of live uses by police, not a single fatality.

I have weapons and would use them. But the way the law is regarding "deadly force" I sure would like the option of "shooting" someone, and knowing that it would not kill them.

Hakim:

You bring to mind several thoughts.

1) If you have a choice as to non-lethal force vs lethal force, and you choose the latter because you think non-lethal force won't work, you'll be in court the rest of your life defending yourself on that item. If lethal force is the only choice, you may be ahead in the long run. That's why there are lawyers.

2) Non lethal force doesn't always work. Rodney King was knocked off his feet with a police stun gun. He got up and was hit a second time with a police stun gun and he got up again. When the incident first started, King was headed for a female CHP officer who drew her firearm. Had she shot/killed King, she would probably have been justified since he was huge and out of control and she was small. LAPD rues the day they took that issue away from her.

3) People on drugs may not be affected by non-lethal force. One drug crazed individual climbed on a police car roof and tore the lights off the car, WITH A BROKEN ARM. I wouldn't want to get close enough to him to use a tazer. He dould cover 15 feet in 1.5 seconds. Not enough time to draw a firearm if the tazer didn't stop him.

Lots of legal issues involved in this.

Hi Joe,

You make all good points, and I agree.

I live in AZ, which looks very favorably upon the rights of citizens to bear and use arms for self-defense.

In many places, if one does shoot or kill anyone, even when in a life or death situation, the legal costs and problems can just be horrific. We have all heard the wacky cases.

I have always said that for the "average person" (none of whom are here at TBN /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif) they are probably better off without a gun --- UNLESS they are truly trained and REGULARLY go to the range (like every couple of weeks, at least).

Those who have have law enforcement or military backgrounds are in a different category, to my mind. They probably can handle weapons well. But many average people with no prior experience with handguns, they COULD NOT hit a 4 X 4 piece of plywood at 20 feet with a .45.

In our family, among other things, we carry Surefire E2 flashlights in the side panel of every car. That is a VERY effective tool to lift and flash the light at somebody, and get enough time to GET AWAY.

I am not especially interested in shooting or killing anybody: I ONLY want to remove myself or loved ones from the danger if at all possible. I'll get way and call the cops. They are infinitely better at shootouts with armed criminals than I ever will be.

I would like to get my hands on one of the actual Taser guns. If I am confronted with anything less than deadly force, I probably can get the job done with a stun device. But you're right, if I have both lethal and non-lethal, well, maybe better off to just shoot. But, that has many considerations as well, the first being, will I hit the attacker? Not a sure thing by any means.

I don't think the Rodney King officers were using the Taser device, but other stun guns. There is a difference.

Why in the heck would cops have to experience the taser before they can use them? They don't have to get shot by their service revolver or beat over the head with a club do they?

A couple of years ago in our local paper there was a man in the county i live in shot hiself in the foot to see what it felt like /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif As if that wasnt enough about a year later the same drunk idiot tried it again, i quess he is a slow learner /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hakim,

One problem with the "tasers" that shoot out the electrical leads is that they shoot out electrical leads. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The problem is that both wires have to hit flesh to shock. If only one hits and the other one misses the things don't work. Soomeone is wearing heavy winter clothes the taser can be problematc. And can wind or the movement of the user or target.

Another problem with the flying leads is the eyes. There is a risk that the leads will hit someone in the eyes and cause injury and blindness. That really should not be an issue but it is. I think this is why many Law Enforcement agencies DONT use these kind of stun guns.

The problem with the stun guns that don't shoot electrical leads is that they don't shood electrical leads. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif This means that the user has to be within touching distance of the bad guy which is NOT goodness. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

OTOH, I think they can be a deterant. I had an opportunity to be shocked a few years ago. I turned down the offer. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif The sight of electricty bouncing across two leads on the taser was enough for me to say NO! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And if we TBNers are not average are we above or below average? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

ALan L,

In theory, the fact that an officer has been sprayed in training allows them to testify in court to the direct effects of the tear gas, OC, or stun gun. Every one knows that it is a bad thing to get in the head with a chunk of wood or metal much less get shot. A lawyer can hype up the use of spray or stun guns but I think that this is limited if the officer has been hit during training.

dmccarty:

An excellent point about court testimony. As usual, the officer decides in a few seconds and has years to justify his decisions.

However, while observing several "volunteers" go through the pepper spray, I observed a vastly different effect on different people. What it proved to me, was that if you sprayed a person, he might react within a few seconds or less, or it might take 5-15 or 20 seconds. If I spray a subject, then what do I do, wait to see if it works; get rid of it and draw a firearm or what? If the subject is wearing glasses, then it is even less effective. A person pumped up on drugs or adrelanine can cover 30 feet in a couple of seconds. Plus the wind must be taken into account or you could spray yourself.

The problem with the old mace was that it affected light skinned, light complected people more than dark skinned, dark complected people. Margo Kidder would feel it faster than Opra Winfrey, and it didn't work on dogs, whereas pepper spray will affect a dog.

A tazer is also bulkier to carry and needs a fresh charge. My S & W revolver and my Sig Sauer semi-automatic were always ready.

An interesting issue.

Our PD purchased enough tazers for all line officers.
We had the option of getting a 5 second "ride" or not.
Guess which option I chose? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I watched the young officers volunteer and for five seconds, watched them go completely stiff.
They work.
We have the Taser X26; shoots 15 feet pretty accurately.
With both barbs on a subject, no one we've tazed has had to have more than 3 "rides".
It really works the muscles hard.
After a few "rides", it's like running a 10k race!!!

In NC, there is no requirement that they be for police only.
Anyone can purchase them; but @ about $500-600 each (plus extra cartridges) , they don't have many civilian buyers.

   / Experimenting with a Tazer.... #36
Tazers and stun guns are really different things. The tazer shoots a couple leads to the victim/subject. The stun gun is hand held and you press the contacts against the victim/subject. The stun gun takes a 5 to 8 second application to bring a person down and it simply does not affect everyone. All the students in my qualifying class had to take a self inflicted jolt from a stun gun, usually in the leg. Not any worse that being punched in the leg. Certainly not enough to knock a person down or render them unconscious.
