Hi folks. I have a new 5105 that sees a lot of bushhog work near trees. I keep catching my vertical stack on limbs. what are some advantages or disadvantages of installing underbelly exhaust to the rear? How about one that goes out to the side? Thanks!

To adapt for orchard use, I rotated my exhaust forward 90 degrees. The manifold to muffler joint is square with four bolts so this was simple to do.

For a new tractor I would also rotate the muffler tip outward, but on this elderly Yanmar I couldn't budge it.

On larger tractor.. I've seen people build a brace from the front bumper, angled up and over the stack then attached to the rops or canopy, as a means to deflect branches.. Also seent he underslung and forward pointing.

Thing about forward pointing, and even side pointing.. I think you might get a good bit of exhaust in your face.

Under is great.. no exhaust.. but then you have to look at ground clearance.. and if you will be catching anything on fire.

If you are looking for a 'rig', I've also seen that flexible metal exhaust tubing ran down the side of the tractor.. then up by/behind a rops support.. kind of a long sloping stack.. Even seen some county tractors like that..

Good luck

On my TC55, the Exhaust is underbelly mounted to the front half of the tractor and pointing outward, with about a 15degree, bend forward and down. It is Very annoying when it hasnt rained in two months and you are running high RPMS and it kicks up a dust bowl that you have to drive into.

On this particular tractor I have not had any exhaust intake (my breath) issues. I had a different color tractor from a rental place that I did experience nauseating efffects because the exhaust hung around the driver. Since the rental was more of a 30HP size tractor the driver would have been closer to the exhaust output as compared to my large 55.

My two cents.

My Case-IH 385 has the underbelly exhaust. I'm in wooded areas a good bit and have had no problems with ground clearance or hanging. I'm sure that eventually it will happen, though. The exhaust is a nuisance when working at the rear of the tractor hooking up implements, etc. I've been thinking of rerouting the muffler parallel to the side of the engine, but so far only thinking.

I forgot to mention-----I bought a gas powered stick saw and spent a couple of days walking around my place cutting those low limbs so they weren't slapping me in the face. Now I don't have the exhaust stack clearance problem. It might not be the solution for everyone, but is an option to reworking a vertical exhaust.

DING DING DING DING!

..........and that is the stuff you can see. I noticed this same exact problem at dusk and with the lights on you would be amazed at the particulate in the air.............so bad so that I postponed until some rain fell. Each design has plus and minuses but contributing to engine wear is a no brainer for a change

Had a Ford 1920 w/vertical stack and had to reweld or replace it several times because of limbs. Plus for every encounter that did damage, there were 100 encounters that required extra time to finesse through. The new Kubota has a muffler under the hood and the exhaust is pointed down and to the left. Much better than before, but when bush hogging, now I see snakes on the left side of the tractor.

I don't care which type exhaust you have.At one time or another you are going to get some fumes , i personally like either the side exhaust of the underbelly.

I had a vertical exhaust, above the hood. I found that after hours of running the tractor, my lungs felt scorched.

I ran the exhaust to an underbelly configuration and haven't been breathing fumes since. Sure, I can smell the exhaust but it's not like I'm breathing lungs full of it.

Sure, the tractor looked more like a tractor in the up position, but my lungs sure like the underbelly position.
