2002 Deere 790 4WD
I recently purchased a 2002 JD 790, which is proving to be an excellent tractor -- except the top of the exhaust pipe is exactly level with my face while I'm driving. I would like to reduce the amount of diesel particulates I inhale, but am severely finance limited. I was thinking I could just hose-clamp a short piece of pipe onto the top of the existing exhaust stack to add a few inches, is there some reason this wouldn't work?

If I can do this, what is a safe (& cheap) type of piping to use, as I'm assuming it needs to be high heat rated & where is the easiest place to find this? Is there something I can get at Lowe's or AutoZone?

Thanks in advance!

It'll work. If you operate under trees it may catch on a branch. You can get short lengths of exhaust pipe intended as extensions (straight or curved) and exhaust pipe clamps at an auto parts store, or on line from summit auto or similar.

Some tractors have exhausts set up so the muffler can be attached in either the up stack position or pointing forwards.

Something like thiswould work.https://www.autozone.com/emission-c...er/surebilt-1-3-4in-x-18in-tail-pipe/402305_0 Just measure the O.D of your exhaust pipe, and tell them what you need. You may need to cut to the length you want, so as to get in a building, or under low limbs, etc. Hose clamps wou;d probably hold it,if you'd cut some slots around it, to make it collapse easier. But a regular clamp is like $2.00. Depending on how tight of a fit it is, it would probably just set on there, with nothing holding it, but if there is a bit of slop, flooping around may damage the outlet pipe on your muffler, and or manifold.

If you need only a very short piece stop by a muffler shop that makes exhaust system. They probably will have a scrape for no charge.

The way the top is your going to have to cut it straight to add a piece of pipe.....

I like the muffler shop idea, or measure and go to an auto parts store. On a previous tractor I rotated the exhaust 90 degrees to face forward. If memory serves, I unbolted a short elbow from the manifold, rotated, then added a shorter muffler.

My Mahindra pipes out bottom right and still hits me in the face and takes forever to get the smell out. I will be selling and getting a closed cabin soon as I can BUT for the time being and as a kid who lost his open cab farmer pops to emphysema/copd, I am with u OP. Limiting those particulates every chance I can. Trying to figure out whether I can pipe out the back or some other way and I keep realizing it’ll be exposed and unprotected either way I go. Keeping an eye on this post and looking into ideas already presented. Great info guys and thanks for the post OP.

I wanted to point out the "flooping" is an excellent new word & I am definitely adopting this one. ;)

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts. I realized while bushhogging today, as has been pointed out, I'd have to cut off the top of the existing pipe first, since it points sideways, but that seems doable if I am careful.

It doesn't look like it has a muffler on the stack (stack is all the same diameter), I'll have to pull up the schematic to see how JD set that up so I know what I need to not damage. I suspect I should probably unbolt it from the side of the tractor first before I cut it, if I do that, so I don't yank anything apart with whatever crazy sawing method I come up with...

Good suggestion about a shop, I do have a good local place that does welding/diesel/mod work that I have a good relationship with, I will ask them what they have as they would definitely sell me scrap for cheap or free & would also offer handy tips. I thought about too, if I clamp an extension on, maybe I should wrap it around a rubber something to absorb vibration? I did that with a generator I bolted onto my metal work boat so it wouldn't shake me off the seat, it works really well.

Tractor doesn't have to go under buildings (since it is owned by a poor person [me] it has to sit outside) so that's not a problem. I mow under a few trees, but I wasn't planning on extending it any higher than the ROPS. Good point though about making sure whatever fitting takes into account occasional branch snagging ability, as that will definitely happen.

Thanks again, I will explore options - and please feel free to contribute if there are other ideas!

Inside that pipe is some metal pieces that keep the water from getting in to the engine if you look on the side of the pipe there should be a little weep hole 6 or 8 inches down where the water drains out....

See if you can just rotate what you have to redirect the fumes.
