JD 2040 - MF265 - JD5520 4x4 Cab FEL BH
I ordered a new JD 5520 w/cab, MFWD & FEL. It is scheduled for production this next week. I ordered it with the horizontal side exhaust (exhaust exits by left front tire). Is this a mistake? Should I have ordered the standard vertical exhaust? Anyone had any experience with the horizontal front exhaust, any problems? Sure seems like it would be nice to have a clear view without a pipe sticking up in your face, but there must be some disadvantages because most tractors still come with verticals. I have until Monday to let them know if I want to change. Tractor will be used for general farm/ranch work - haying, cattle and snow removal.

Comments most welcome

Thanks

Well, I don't have a JD, but I have the horizontal exhaust out the left side of the engine compartment. The only negative is that it blows on loader arms and leaves it black, but I don't care.
The big plus is not only visibility, but also not getting it caught on everything when I'm working the woods.
I wouldn't want a vertical stack. John

I have both versions on my tractors. Hmmm, what I like more?
Horizontal, for sure. It is, as you described, just ahead of rear left tire on my bigger tractor.
I have feeling that it produce less noise than vertical, it can't pick up some limb in woods (no ROPS on tractor), and sight is better for sure.
Verical is better if you'll pull some implements where people must seat, like cabbage or potato planter.
Another advantage is for hay making - to avoid possible fire (but never hear about fire start from exhaust).

Check does horizontal exhaust is compatible with loader frame /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Vertical or horizontal has not been a big deal to me. I've had both, but on tractors without a cab, so I liked the horizontal better; kept the exhaust farther from my face. And of course if you leave the tractor outside, I'd sure want some kind of exhaust cap if it's vertical to keep any rain from getting into the exhaust, while that was not necessary with the horizontal.

I've got a vertical and an underneith.

Let's just say that tree limbs and the vertical don't always get along. I think I'd find any soot on loader arms/tire/engine cover (though an annoyance) LESS of an annoyance when compared to a limb catching the vertical pipe and knocking it off the machine or bending it over.

Strangely, I've heard that for resale most people want the vertical exhaust. Don't ask me why - because it doesn't seem to make sense to me. I've got vertical exhaust on my TN70 and I like it just fine.

With a cab, it probably wouldn't make much of a difference which way you go. The cab is going to be just aft of the vertical exhaust, so clearance problems aren't going to apply. Personally, if I'm going to hit something big, I'd rather hit it with the exhaust than the cab - much less expensive to fix. Also, with the cab, you won't have the exhaust fume problem that you might have with the horizontal pipe on a non-cab tractor. The vertical exhaust pipe is going to be less of a visibility obstruction than the pillars at each corner of the cab, so visibility won't be much of a factor either.

My experience is that the low exhaust outlets are a little quieter as far as volume but it seems like resonance becomes common annoyance in its place. The big advantage for vertical exhaust on your tractor is that you can cut it off to be the same height as your cab top as an indicator whether you can go under stuff. As big (huge) as your cab will be and with the muffler under the hood, one pipe in the line of sight will not be noticed.
