I'm hoping to buy a 3 to 6 ton excavator. I know nothing about excavators, and was wondering if there are any good Forums out there, that I could use?

The land I will be working on is soft so I'll be looking for light weight dispersion over large tacks and a good length boom. I will be buying secondhand (5 - 7 yrs old)- what are the most reliable models on offer?

Any thing you can tell me will be much appreciated?

I'm not sure if they make the smaller models but Komatsu, followed by Hitachi/John Deere/Kubota would be my choices. The little Kubotas are very handy. A friend of mine has one that salt water ate out the undercarriage . Other than that, everything else still works fine.

The Yanmar's are top notch machines. I have a 1996 B3-2 (6500 lbs) and also a 1996 B7-2 cab model (17,300 lbs). Both are zero turn with a very cool offsetable boom. Both have rubber tracks and push blades, as well as two-speed travel. I sell these things, so I have also had Komatsu, Mitsubishi and Kobelco. I like them all, but my favorite so far is the B7-2.

Kubota all the way. Go to your nearest kubota dealer and ask for what he/she has or what they can get you or traderonline.com
