That reminds me of a story I ran across years ago.
An elderly man died and found himself walking on an abandoned country road. Next to him was his dog, that had died years before. They had a joyful reunion, and started walking along the road. After a time they came to a beautiful city with alabaster gates that reached to the sky. They welcomed him with glad cries, but when he asked for drink of water for his dog he was told dogs were not allowed to enter. He stood in stunned silence for a moment, then turned and continued walking.
After a while he came to a mossy wooden gate with an old gentleman sitting next to it. When he asked for a drink of water for his dog, the old gentleman said, "Certainly," and drew a bucket of clear water from an old well.
The man looked around and saw a quiet meadow surrounded by trees and forest. "What is this place," he asked?
"Why, this is Heaven," replied the old gentleman. "Welcome, to you and your dog."
"But, what about the other place," asked the man?
"Be glad you didn't enter there," said the old gentleman. "That's where we put people who would abandon an innocent friend."
