When I was about 11 years old I started my grandpa's 1962 John Deer Tractor and got scared because I did not know how to shut it down. The tractor ran all the morning, afternoon and when he came home that evening he shut it down when he came home. I knew I was in trouble when I herd those words Christopher David where are you at boy and it was off to the wood shed. When you hear your first and middle name you know your in trouble.

I expect most folks over the age of 45 or so have been whupped by their old man (or other adult relative) when they were kids...that's including me.

When I was young my daddy worked as a Longshoreman from early to late. Back then he was making a lot of overtime. Lots of days he would be gone when I got up and still not home when I went to bed. So as often as not, when I needed a whipping, it was Mamma who did it. Daddy said he didn't want to have to wake me up to give me a whipping. The one that stands out in my mind is when we were up at my granny's house. My cousins and I got in the hog field and played in their mud hole. I think it was on a Sunday and we had on our church clothes. Let me tell you, it hurts to be spanked with a shoe.

We didn't have a wood shed while I was going up, but just outside the back door was a silver maple, the kind that has nice new sapling shoots growing around the base of the truck every year. At the end of the day and Dad had come in from the field, was done with chores, Mom would review the days events. If anyone had messed up bad enough Dad would pull out his pocket knife and make us go cut our own switch and it had better meet his expectations or punishment was worse. I only cut 1 switch before comprehension sunk in, but I felt the punishment was really worse having to cut and trim your own switch knowing what was in store. The switch was never applied vey hard or long, by the time we got done cutting it and handing it over we had already learned our lesson (and we learn very quick).

My aunt used a willow switch. I'm sure it left marks that would put her in jail today. Her picture would be in the newspaper depicted as a monster who seeks out small children to abuse for her personal pleasure.

But looking back, we had it coming and while it hurt, there was no lasting imprint that would put us on the Dr. Phil or Oprah show crying about our abusive care givers. We survived quite nicely and all have jobs, families and contribute to society.

I may not have all of the answers to the world's problems but what I do know, is that the willow switch in the hands of my Aunt Helen should be at every grocery store, shopping mall, or any other place that young people gather. When today's ill-mannered children are on full display at the grocery store I just can imagine the look on their face when she got then with the willow switch. Again, she would be in jail but I would pay for the privilege to see it.

Mom broke a few wooden mixing spoons and a ruler or two on me. I think it helped.
Dad never struck me - he'd just look disappointed and that hurt worse than the spoon.

Mom = Wooden spoon. She would chase us with the darn thing. If you tried to cover up, you got it on the knuckles, which was even worse.

Dad = Belt. Only ever got it witht he belt a couple times. The threat was enough to keep us in line.

Mom also made me bite into a bar of soap once, when she heard me swear. Yuck!
