I have a Deutz 1011 in a skid steer. With the cold temps this year, the thing has been a bear to get started. This appears to be inherent to the engine because I used another machine with the same engine and noticed it too was having trouble starting. It would appear the drag of the cold pumps doesn't allow the starter to spin the engine fast enough. When it was zero I couldn't get the engine to spin fast enough to make smoke. A new battery and jump start didn't help. This engine is oil cooled so adding a heater is difficult. I added silicone oil heater and also put one on the main oil tank. In 20 degree temps and two hours on the heaters she now spun fast enough to make smoke, but no attempt to fire. That oil heater just isn't putting enough heat into the engine. Took the air filter apart and sprayed some ether on the inner filter. Without using the preheater I cranked the engine and after a second it fired and idled nicely.

Trying to do more research on how to get this thing to reliably start. This engine has a single manifold heater. Wish it had glow plugs because they are much more effective. There is a second plug where I could add another manifold heater. Not sure if I need a second relay or not. Dealer isn't sure either. I've read a couple of on-line owners manuals and the 1011 is available with a ether start system. I'm considering the Kat's 33100 because it will be easier to install than the cable system. Anybody know where this system is piped in? Do I drill the manifold after the turbo so the ether goes to all cylinders? Do I pop the plug out and then use that port? Will the heater cause the ether light in the manifold? If they inject the ether after the heater, then is it a 4 port system?

I have knowledge on using ether in Diesel engines even as new as 2013 Volvo and freight liners. If it were me I would highly consider a ether injection system. A friend of mine owned and operated as a truck driver. Winter time would come and we know those things are a bear to start even if you do plug them in overnight. He found out for 40$ he could install it. He said the difference is night and day. It perfectly injects a small amount per push of a button. It is said a 1 to 2 second spray from a can could be up to 6 times more than required. Always spray ether into an engine while cranking and onto the filter element. If sprayed onto the air filter itself it while "disperse" a safe amount of either into an engine. At my old job we would use brake clean and never lost an engine using brake clean either!! I have lots of experience "sniffing" nose candy into different engines. I can definately give you some hints and help. So this is an air cooled diesel? A salamander/ air forced heater near the engine could help a lot and it would only take minutes of time. If the cold start assist is not working well it may need repairs. When using flammable brake cleaner we have had good results because it is less flammable it's very hard to over spray and add too much.
