I have a Woods TC74 tiller that uses "EP 00" lubricant in the chain drive. The local Woods only sells Land Pride EP 00 for $18.99/qt. Tractor Supply sells "00" lubricant for $4.99/qt. Am I comparing apples vs apples when comparing "EP 00" vs "00"? Thanks.

So long as it has the "EP" rating, "00" is "00"

EP is Extreme pressure and indicates they have solid lubricants in them like graphite. Its made to take the shock loading and keeping the metal parts from contacting each other. 00 and EP00 are not the same.

To clarify, 00 and EP 00 are not the same. That said, I would use the TSC 00 in a chain case but probably not a gearbox. Others will disagree as is typical of a thread about lubricants.

I agree, gears definitely, chain would seem to spread the forces out a little more over so many contact points. Hypoid gear oils for car rear ends are EP as well. Im sure its the same instance with this, just a thicker version. I've never seen 00 lubricant, I assume its between gear oil and grease for consistency?

Thanks everyone for the info. I think I will steer away from the 00 and go with the EP 00, just to be on the safe side.

Not quite.

EP indicates a set of "Extreme Pressure" additives that protect gears from shock load damage. 00 indicates the amount of soap in the grease, which in this case is very little and a fairly oily "grease". 0 and 00 greases are often called a semi-fluid.

If you just buy a 00 grease it may lack the EP protection for the gearing. Just check and see if EP or Extreme Pressure is listed.

That is precisely what I said guys; EP indicates the lubricant has "extreme pressure" additives in the mix. "00" is a measure of the lubricants viscosity, or consistency, if you will. Ep00 and 00 rated lubricants will have the same viscosity, within "00" parameters regardless of the EP rating; the EP rating in no way changes the viscosity of the product, and yes, the op should use an EP rated product

00 is 00 whether or not it has EP additives. 00EP is great to use in gearboxes. This is a roller chain case. The roller chain will live just fine with or without an EP additive package in the lube. Fact of the matter is, he could fill the chain case with used motor oil and it would be just fine until long after all of us lost interest in the debate.
