I was back blading my driveway going up hill on my JD 110 when I heard a slight pinging in motor I believe with the RPMs dropping slightly and a bit of black smoke coming from the exhaust. I was doing short passes and each time I got to the steep part it got a little worse and after about 4 times it stalled on me. I tried cranking it over and it almost started then stopped. Now it won't even turn over....

It is as if there is resistance somewhere stalling the motor. I think it is either the motor itself or could one of the hydraulic pumps be failing and cause enough resistance to stall the motor?

I am going to head out and disconnect the main implement pump and see if that changes anything. Does anyone know if I can take the auxiliary/steering pump out of the system to rule that out too?

I don't really know where to go from there with out splitting the tractor to check the transmission... very big job.

Would the oil pan drain screw indicate if there was an engine failure? How do you check if it's an engine failure if you can not turn the engine over?

Is there anything else connected that could stall the motor?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Kelly

Well after letting it sit over night it fired up right away. I only ran it for about 45 seconds and shut it down. It seemed to run well but I am nervous of what could of caused it to quit.
I realized I did not check the temp gauges when it quit on me. It makes me wonder if it was over heating. Both oil levels look good.
Is there anything I should check before I fire it up again and run it?
Cheers

Is the rad all nicely blown out and clean? I am amazed on my Kubota Loader, how much difference it makes for operating temperature if I take a few minutes to blow the dust out of the Rad and coolers.

I would drain out the oil and see how it looks and smells then go from there.

Thanks for your advice everyone.

I fired it up again and drove it about 60 yards to the first little hill and it did not sound absolutely normal, not bad but I could notice something very subtle and it did not have any power to climb the small hill with out working way too hard. It was only mildly warmed up too. I stopped and parked it there.

The coolant level was down quite a bit. I have a young employee operating it mostly and I did see him the topping up the rad fluid about 2 or 3 days ago but it usually does not need topping very often. I am quite sensitive of any drips under the machine and had not noticed any. I had been tuning up a section of steeper driveway (15-20%) so it is plausible a low coolant level and operating on a slope could of been too low and had a detrimental effect on the motor.

Is it possible this lack of power could be something else like an injector or something? Bad fuel? The air filter and fuel filter were replaced last fall and have very few hours on it. The motor is dirtier than it normally is in a few spots. Could it be a vacuum leak or something like that?

I have not cleaned the rad/ coolers, the machine did get quite dirty last week as well. I was planning on washing it down when I finished this driveway and doing a good go over.

Next step is to drain the engine oil and have a look and smell.

Thanks again

I would do the fuel filters 1st.. then the oil.. but that's just me..{less expensive}
I can tell the oil quality from the dip stick.. looks, feel & smell..
IF an injector went south, blew off a tip or clogged.. there would be an excessive amount of black smoke & a noticeable skip..
Check your fuel FLOW.. possible restriction from the fuel tank..MOST have screens in the tank outlets..
Lift pump working properly?? To much hydro drag..?? Good luck.. nothin' worse than breaking down in the middle of a job..

Yes, 2008 110 TLB with 2200hr

What is the lift pump and hydro drag?

It does feel more like i'm trying to drive it while using another hydraulic implement, is that hydro drag? That is why I was wondering if a hydraulic pump is starting to go putting load on the engine. Do hydraulic pumps fail like that?
