I went down to my local JD dealer and bought an oil filter.
The original one is a #M801209 they told me the filter has been changed. They gave me a #M806419 the only problem with it it is half the size of the original. The reason given was they had one filter that would fit more than one application.
They said Deere did away with #M801209 to decrease inventory needs. I know the small filter will fit as the base is the same. What I have a problem with is the filter is smaller less surface to filter, and more important the new filter holds less oil.
I'm thinking the next time I need an oil filter I will pick up another brand that has a full size filter. I will buy quality filter
like Wix. Am I being totally out of line here? I should also say the filter size went down but they forgot to bring down the price. Any thoughts, opinions?

Thanks , Norm /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I think something simialr was covered here. Do a search. I always heard that when changing filters the first time you should go to bigger filter.

herbenus,

I found the post that mentioned the downsizing of the filter.
It was on a 4700 John Deere. I guess what the dealer said was correct. It does save the company money by having a filter fit more models. I maybe splitting hairs, but I always liked the bigger filter for more filter area and oil capacity.

Thanks for your reply

In my opinion, I think we all change the oil so often that a filter from wix would do just fine. There is alot of discussion on brands but Wix is a fair alternative. Modern Oil is also very good quality, so I suspect you will get many years of service with it. Good luck.LLoyd

The issue of the bigger filter is that you get something like a quart more oil circulating around. More oil translates to better cooling.

I can't agree more. I know on my 850 I was told the longer filter would hit the power steering if used. Probably the reason JD only went to the shorter filter. I only run a Fram filter now, had a chance to buy a case of I think it was Hastings (lucky I only took 1) after about two or three times of knocks on startup I changed the filter back to a Fram and have been fine since. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
