I have a few acres that are largely covered with cheatgrass. There is some scattered sage and native grasses as well. This is in eastern Washingtion with an annual rainfall of 8.5", and the land is not irrigated.
I want to eliminate the cheatgrass and plant a mixture of 7 dryland grasses that is blended for the climate here. There is a product that I have heard is a generic version of Plateau, which isn't available to homeowners any more, that is called Panoramic. I understand that at the right rate (6oz per acre) that it will knock the heck out of the cheatgrass but not harm most of the native grasses, and doesn't affect the dryland blend grasses that I want to plant.
The company that blends the seed mix says to seed first and then apply the Panoramic. I would appreciate any advice or changes I need to make to how I plan to do this, which is as follows:
The seed company says that mid to late November is the best time to plant the blended seeds. In mid November I will till the property until there is a good seedbed free of most debris and clumps. I will then go over it with a cultipacker to firm up the seed bed. I will then broadcast spread the seed mix. I will then go over it again with the cultipacker to get the seeds into the soil. I will then spray the Panoramic to hopefully kill the cheatgrass and other weed seeds. I believe Panoramic is a pre and post emergent herbicide.
Does that seem right? Should I fertilize after I spary the Panoramic or wait until the spring?
Any advice or thoughts would be most appreciated.
