I posted the problem summary in the repair forum:

I acquired a copy of the service manual online and while it is helpful in that it has full schematics of the electrical and hydraulic systems, I don't know enough about hydraulics to know for sure what I am looking at in the attached pictures.

The manual refers to a "detent coil" - is that the one with the big hose and wires going into it - does that need power to let fluid flow into the hydraulics - I'm wondering if one of the wires to it is shorted out or if possibly using the rig for that day without the alternator charging maybe damaged the coil (lower voltage mean more current right)? If you notice the bigger tube on the right and zoom in you will see a red and white wire broken off - that has been broken for years to no ill effect although I'm not sure what it was supposed to do originally (I mow a lot of brush/blackberries with a hydraulic skid steer mower on the front and while I generally try to mow it low enough I can see, sticks and stuff sometimes pop up and get stuck up in there - I'm sure brush is what broke the red/white wire off - tractor really needs a belly pan - or maybe I need to be more careful).
The shorting problem that I thought was the alternator but turned out not to be seems to have gone away the same time the hydraulics died, but I need to get the hydraulics working so I can lift the load/hoe enough to at least move the machine/possibly take it to the dealer - although I will admit I'm hesitant because while the JCB has been a great machine, I don't think the dealer I bought it from still carries them and I doubt they know how to work on them although they no doubt know more than me. You can get parts from them from several places in UK and Europe - I'm sure shipping will be $$$.
If anyone has any advice on how to troubleshoot, I can PM you the schematics if that would be helpful - I'm assuming posting them would probably be a no no.
