I have a Echo chain saw model 3450 that I use about once or twice a year. My gallon of two cycle fuel is now empty and I need to make another batch. I somehow lost the manual on what the ratio should be. I'm guessing 32:1
Sound right?

DaveNH, I don't know about the Echo, but my Poulan manual calls for 40:1.

That's the pre-mix ratio recommended for the two I've got.

Sounds good to me./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

The difference is in the oil, not the machine. If you get 40:1 oil, mix it 40:1. Also if you get Stihl or Homelite oil (maybe other brands as well) it already has fuel stabilizer in it. This is important for those of us who use these machines once or twice a year.

I don't know about the difference being in the oil. A lot of the oils come with ratios charted on the bottle telling you how much gas to add for each fuel-oil ratio. My weed trimmer requires 32:1, my Husky saw requires 50:1(orange to match by tractor). When in doubt, use more, not less oil. You can always clean it out if it gets gummed up, or to avoid that, just run it to dry since you only use it a few times a year.

Remember that fuel only stays fresh for about 1 month. That old fuel makes for a hard
starting saw/lawn mower etc. Gas is not what it used to be. Alot of changes have been
made to make it burn cleaner.

Actually, the oil is not what it used to be, after a month. The oil itself will breakdown, and lose it's lubricating properties. I have friends that used to race professioonal motocross. They would not use the gas if it were over 24 hours old. They wanted optimum lubrication from the oil for performance, and to protect thier $$$$$ racing engines.

And, yes, the gas is terrible these days...

DaveNH,

I saw your post earlier and while at my dealer today noticed he sold Echo chain saw oil by the six pack for mixing 1 gallon at a time. Each bottle was 2.6 OZ. This figures out to be about 50:1 give or take a few drops. I mix my chainsaw oil a bit heavier.

Thanks

Today I stopped in at HD and also saw that they had the small
containers you mentioned. Last time I made a batch I must have bought some general purpose two cycle oil and have to figure the ratio. Yes, it been a long time since then. My, how things have changed. I need to get out more often! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

All this talk about pre-mix formulation reminded of this.

While down at the local hardware store (one of a chain of stores here in New England) they were sellin' 2 stroke oil from a well known manufacturer of hand held outdoor equipment.

They were both the same 8 oz bottle. Some were labeled 16:1 mix, some 32:1, and charging more money for the bottles that were labeled 32:1. Anyhow reading the labels on the bottles the 16:1 says to add one 8oz bottle to one gallon of gas, and the more expensive 32:1 bottles an 8oz bottle to two gallons of gas. Go figure.
I got a laugh out of it maybe you will too.

Gee, has to make ya wonder if they had one labeled as a 40:1 mix would it be even more expensive yet. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif
