Eagles at Sheffield Mills, Nova Scotia

Thought you'd enjoy. Some local chicken farmers put out chickens that didn't make it, to the delight of the local bald eagle population. The day I was there, we counted 75 eagles either circling or on the ground when the farmer showed up with 4 pails of dead chickens.

Absolutely stunning Birds, thanks for posting the photo's. we only get them here this time of year in small numbers around a few area lakes. I enjoy watching them and the Golden eagle when we lived in Colorado. Incredible birds.

Spectacular pictures. Thanks for posting. One question? Are the Eagles being fed these dead chickens on a regular basis this time of year? Wouldn't that deter them from utilizing their natural "Predator" instincts?

The farmers just throw out dead chickens when they have them, but I think they must save up extras for this 2-weekend "event" each winter. Eagles are certainly predators, but they are equally scavengers and will pick up whatever they can. I have shots of eagles eating dead deer, beavers, coyote, and raccoon, as well as these eating dead chickens. So I don't think this will do them any harm. It may be a humanitarian gesture to make sure they get enough to eat in the tough winter months when the lakes and rivers are frozen over and they can't fish as well.

One of the dangers to the Eagles is from man. If the birds are eating cast off chickens that is fine . If they grab any chickens or other domestic food someone could poison the the baited chickens and kill the Eagles.

I feel we should all do our best to support wild life by posting pictures like the the ones you have done.
