Hello everyone

Been shopping around for a compact lately. I am replacing a JD855 that does "general chores" Brush hogging, equipment moving, barn cleanout etc.

Recently I switched to Round Bales from Small Squares, obviously the JD will not lift a 4x5 round bale. So I have to use a larger, much less comfortable tractor to move round bales from the fields, onto the wagons and then into the barn once there.

So I have come across a used DX35 (316 hours) at a dealer that I have dealt with before and been happy, Unit has 116 loader. No rear remotes so I'll need at least one added.

the big questions i have, For anyone out there who has one?

1. Will it lift 4x5 round bales (i'll say 1000 to 1200 lbs?)
2. will it manuver in the barn ? tighter spots? Certainly need the HST.

Any other help or suggestions are appreciated!

I have a DX35 that I used to pick up an outdoor water boiler I built. I estimate by the square footage of steel I used it likely weighs in the range you are talking, maybe slightly heavier. It picked it up, but it was a struggle,I wouldn't want to do it all the time. Around corners I had to be careful not to lift a rear tire, even with wheel weights and a box blade hanging on. It really was too much weight on the front axle IMHO.

i would not trust it to pick those bales up even with 1 on the rear.i looked at a DX55 4x4 an i asked will it lift an haul a 5 by 6 on the front an rear an was told no itll flipp the tractor.so i bought an MX5100HST 4X4 with LA844 quick tatch an it lifts an hauls 5 by 6s all day long.

Yes, it will lift those bales with ease with a FEL bale spear or a 3PH spear or both. It might struggle a bit with 1500 lb bales, but it will have no problem with the 1k to 1.2k size. If you use the FEL, keep a boxblade or other implement on the rear for ballast.

You can maneuver well in a barn because that tractor has the brakes on the left and you can lock one wheel and spin around. This works best in 2wd. Unlike other HSTs with brake pedals on the same size as the HST pedals, the DX35 has them on the left where "god" intended.:D

Seems to be some disagreement on the bale thing!

I personally agree with Jinman on the Pedal item. My JD855 also has brakes on the left and hydro on the right which is a great feature.

Rarely do my bales get anywhere near 1500 unless they are wet and no good anyway!

So if I do go this route I sure hope it pans out on the 4 x 5's. That really is the number 1 reason I am upgrading the tractor anyway. Its tough because I want a unit that will do that but I don't want one that is too big and cumbersome to do the small chores around the place either. So I am walking a line!

I have also looked at some Mahindra tractors new. I guess we'll see what pans out. The dealer needs to put me in the right place I suppose! So to speak!

Looks like there is about 400 lb different weight wise between a DX35 and a MX5100

I'm not sure about the tipping part I guess. You could make up 400 lbs pretty quick and have the same weight ratio I suppose.

The loader comparison isn't as accurate since the DX loader is rated at 1386 @ 19" in front of the lift pins and all I could find on the LA844 was at the Pins and that is 2300

I would assume at the pins the DX loader is 2000? ish?

Oh well Just trying to figure it all out.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Since you are "trying to figure it all out," I'll give you a bit more info about your tractor. The DX35, DX40, and DX45 are all the same size/class of tractor. However, the DX35 is a 3-cyl engine compared to the DX40 & DX45 that are 4-cyl engines. The DX35's hydraulics are set 300 psi lower than the DX40/45. That accounts for the DX35 having lower lift capacity with the same loader as the DX40/45. Also the 3PH has less lift. The maximum hydraulic pressure on the DX35 is 2200 psi and the DX40/45 is 2500 psi. That's why I said that the DX35 would struggle with a 1500 lb round bale and you correctly stated that the lift 19" forward of the pins is 1386 lb. For your 1000-1200 lb bales, you should see no problems as long as you keep the proper ballast. The DX should be strong enough and also small enough to maneuver inside your barn.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions Jinman

I am working on the dealer some here. See if he can hit the right price and maybe we'll bring it home!

The bales moving/lifting is really the most important part for me. So I appreciate your reassurance that it will in fact work for me.

Thanks

here another thing you can do,have them bring the tractor with the understanding that if the tractor cant lift a bale on the front an rear at the sametime you dont own it.an move the bales safely.i did that with my dealer as he wanted to make sure it was the right tractor for me.
