Well, with any luck, next week we will have purchased a new to us house, and I know it is going to consume every spare moment for a while,, Sooooo, the urgency to modify the tailgate on our dump trailer moved up a notch.

Was supposed to do it yesterday, but it came a small flood of pouring rain, and I do not have a shop to work inside of (hence the new house :) )

So, about a 6 month old Homesteader dump with 2 way tailgate, dropped like an old pickup and hung on chains, or opened like a large dump truck, with the chains acting to regulate it. I thought it would be ideal this way.... Oooppps..

OK, the idea of spreading gravel with the tailgate just does not work, you usually need two people involved, or you are dragging your control along the ground, you are only handling 4 to 5 tons at a time so there is just not much room, while it seemed like a good idea, it just never panned out.

When you use it as a tailgate, then that effectively lowers the dumping height, and everything is sliding across your tailgate, that gives some problems as well.

So I lent it to my buddy, and at some point it hung a bit, and I think he bent it somewhat, as evidenced by the gap in the picture.

Debated the best way to do this about a gazillion times, and finally just ran out of time and started in on it. My DW had the better idea of removing everything off the side, including the upper stake pocket, and getting my hinge leafs shorter that way then what I had in mind. I think that was the right thing to do. I can go back later and rework some pockets if I want to go that way.

Of course with about 2/3 of the stuff cut off, my Plasma cutter threw a overtemp light on, then when fooling with it, I got the Parts in Place light on (bad thing) and could not get it to clear either... :( Hope it magically heals itself, but out came the sawzall and the 4.5" grinder with the cutoff wheels because the wife is in the middle of a pond project (hole dug, no liner yet) and she would not be very happy with me if I told her that trailer she said I was spending too much money on and was not really needed was not available for her to use. Funny how that works.

OK, here are some pictures, no done ones yet as it is dark outside while I was working on finishing up.

Looking good so far. Sounds like you have a few irons in the fire for the next few months.

Yep, the wifes landscaping business is going already this year, which is awful darn nice, just hope it keeps up. Large landscaping job coupled with an 11 X 11 pond to start the year off with,,, SWEET!

Now if I could just do maintenance on the equipment,,,,,

Will try and post the done pictures, got it workable tonight, got to think how to make the latches "nice" now so that I am not always loosing pins.

Tractor supply has gate latches, maybe something like this will work. May not be strong enough.Tractor Supply Company - NATIONAL® GATE LATCH

oooohhhhhh,,, Now I am embarresed, You may or may not believe this, but there is actually one of those sitting on the welding table right now, and I did not even consider it......

Not sure if it is large enough, I used 3/4" pins as I would rather be too big then too small, but the concept can work.

Thanks

Well, the trailer has to go make money tomorrow, so finished up the pins to hold it closed this evening, still need to make some tie backs on the doors, but the boss said she would handle that temporarily,,,, Somehow visions of duct tape, bailing wire and bale string pop up in my mind... :)

Anyway, these are todays pins, tomorrow's may be different.

That will work but what is the method you will be using to hold the doors open when you dump it?
I use chains with caribener latched to an "I" hook mounted to side of box.

Thats what I was calling the "tie backs" above. Had another welding project promised out tonight, so wanted to jump on that, but yes, I will need some short chains, or biners, or something or another more permanent. But I bet I look at it tomorrow evening and there is orange bale twine wrapped around it or something...

I have a PJ dump trailer , 14ft. dual axel, when I bought this I was worried about spreading 2b limestone with it. The dump trailer spreads just as well as my F800 ford dump truck and is much cheaper to use. When spreading stone the trick is in setting the chains evidently you don't know how to due this. Pratice.

Nice job! I have a locally made 5x10 dump that came w/ just barn doors. Surprisingly, they don't do too bad a job limiting the dump amount when chained loosly together ... takes a little messing with though :)

That is the same caribiners that I use. My trailer does not have the rod like yours so I had to install an "I" bolt to the flat stock that is welded to the side.
The caribiners are much easier to use and won't just come off when you dont want it to:)

My buddy with his trailer was helping me move today, (bet he is sore tonight :) ) but anyway, on his trailer, I saw what I need to make. No extra pieces to keep track of and set down.

Sometime when things slow down, that is what I will do.

Made me remember those horseshoe gate latches that WroghtnHarv does. Should have thought of it earlier.
