Guys, I have a 6x10 CAM trailer that has the two pins top and bottom for the gate hinges. I’d like to change it to a side opening gate and barn doors.

Can you post any pictures of two or three way setups to open/spread with a dump gate?
I’m looking for low tech DIY cheap ideas.

Here’s an example one I took a picture of but I think this can be simplified with a removable pin and replace somewhere else system.

Thanks!
Lenny

I’d try calling CAM Superline directly and see if they make a gate like you want for your year and style trailer. If they do, maybe your dealer can order you a kit that can be welded on. I have the same tailgate, and it’s a little slow, but works well

The only big thing that I don’t like on mine is that the gate drags the ground if you move the trailer forward to finish dumping. Lifting it off and on completely is a PITA. Stuff gets caught in the gap between the bed and tailgate that has to be cleaned out before the gate will close also necessitating removing the gate sometimes.
Barn doors or a swing gate option would alleviate those issues.

I have welder, and equipment so I can do the mod myself.

I have a deckover so don’t have dragging issues. You can weld, but can you fabricate?

I don't know if this helps but here is a photo of the side hinge on my Load Trail dump. It also hinges on top and bottom.

thats how my PJ Dump is done as well.. also some chain to limit the opening

Way back when, I spread a lot of material with a standard gate affixing the chains to adjust the space between bed and gate to regulate the flow of material. (Definitely a learned process to get the amount of material even close to want you would want)

Anyway, I used to have a tandem dually dump with barn doors only. I always wanted to make some kind of modification to either eliminate the barn doors or to make it a three way gate but never got around to it.

I did not care for the barn doors. The doors had to be opened before dumping else they would be to close to the ground. When I put bulk sawdust in my ten foot wide barn aisle, I would have to back the trailer in, open the barn doors, shovel off some sawdust, pull the trailer back out, open the barn doors, back in and dump the rest.

If you are hauling bulk material, let's say stone for a driveway, you better have a machine close by to finish grading the material out.

I agree with Morning Wood, the manufacturer may be the best way to go if you do not have a good fabrication option.

I ran across a Brimar trailer today with this set up.
I’ve been collecting up materials and about ready to start the changes.

I have barn doors on my dump trailer. I don't like them. They don't stay in place when open and the hinges bend very easily. I'm at a point where I have 1 hinge broken off and the others are all bent. Once they bend, closing the doors and getting them to line up is a big pain. Plus, like said before, you need plenty of room on the sides to swing them open and closed. The only advantage of the barn doors is that I can load my skidloader into the trailer with the ramps. Although, I'm sure there's designs out there that you can do that with a drop down gate. Technically my tailgate is a 3-way, but the drop down requires removing pins to make it work, not an easy lever flip like the OP trailer. Although, the lower swing out has a nice flip lever.

A problem i had hauling my mothers garden waste heap into the bush, was that branches and trash plugged up between the tailgate (with hinges on the top) and bed, shifting the center of gravity behind the trailer axle and lifting the rear of my tractor 3 feet into the air.

The solution i have for that on my current dump, is 3 sided dump ability, so when rebuilding it i will stick to hinges on the bottom of the sideboards (to enable free dumping of branches, as well as forklift loading from the side) and hinges on top of the tailgate so it doesnt drag the ground when dumping plain dirt.

Side dumping might also come in handy when backfilling trenches or roadsides, or when hooking another dumptrailer behind it so i can dump without breaking up the convoy 😁
