I have a cylinder from a dump truck bed that I mounted to a dump trailer. The cylinder has hose connections at both ends of the cylinder and a breather plug at the one end. Could this cylinder be either single or double acting? If I want to hook this into my rear tractor remotes, should the breather be plugged?

The breather makes me think it's a single acting cylinder and only designed for lifting. Then you release the preasure and the hydraulic oil flow back through the pump and into the other end of they cylnder, which is also the resevoir.

From what I understand, you cannot use it under preasure both ways. The piston is designed to work under preasure in one direction. Preasure on it the other way will just force the fluid past the rings and probably ruin them.

Why would you want a cylinder on a dump trailer to work both ways?

I dont want the cylinder to work both ways. I dont understand why this cylinder has two hose ports, one at each end, and a breather.

This is why I dont understand:
I hooked two hoses to the cylinder where possible. Plugged both into my rear remotes and the cylinder to push out. Move the valve joystick the other way and nothing happens. I took one hose out of the remote and removed the quick connect move the joystick and cylinder will push back in very slow while NO fluid exits the hose that I removed the quick connect end. Move the joystick the other way and cylinder pushes out again, when it reaches the max out position the breather will pour hydraulic fluid out.

I agree with Eddie that with the breather threaded in and it original application on the truck bed makes me think it is single acting. However, on my disc it is a double acting cylinder with a breather on the rod end to make it single acting (i.e. one hose operation.) One thing that you may have problems with is if there are any checks in the system that will cause a problem with gravity down.
