How do I know how much grease is left in my grease gun? Can I just open it and look at it or will that make it hard to use it again?

Just pull out on the spring/charge handle. It will pull easy until you hit the face that is pushing on the grease. The amount the handle that sticks out, is what is left in the grease gun. The handle is the same one you pull back to put a new tube in the gun, or suck out of a pail of grease.
Funny, a guy I work with just asked the same question.
I hope I explained it clear enough, him I could just show.
If you open it, your just going to make a mess and get air in the gun, which makes it hard to use.

Just finding your grease gun is a step up from where I was last week. A couple of months ago I had brought a few loads of stuff from the barns at the old home place. Where I stored my grease gun was loaded down with all sorts of other stuff, but no grease gun. Last week I bought a 6' RFM, and wanted to grease it after the first hour of use. I spent an hour looking for my grease gun, then called the wife to tell her I was going to town, and did she need anything. She gave me a pretty big list for Walmart, so I loaded up and got ready to go. I had already cranked up, but turned the truck off and looked one more time. There is a bin of old rags, and someone [me?] had laid the grease gun in there and it was three quarters covered up with rags. Now I didn't need to go to town, but since I had this long list, I had too.
So just having the grease gun, even if you are not sure how much is left in it is a good thing.

Simple rule to avoid this issue- Always have a new grease cartridge in the toolbox/on the shelf. When you put the new cartridge in the gun, make a mental note to buy another.

When you pick it up and it feels "kinda light" then you know you are going to run out before you get to the last zerk on the tractor. Happens every time
