Yanmar 1500D
Anybody know anything about draft control? Does my little 1500D have it? If so, how do I use it?

A draft control system allows a tool such as a plow to stay at a uniform depth when there is variation in draft. With some tractors such as Fords, fergersons, Oliver etc. the top link of the 3pt. hitch actuates the hydralic mechism which raises or lowers the implement accourding to ground contours. This system eliminated the need for guage wheels with ground engaging equipment. Your 1500 does not have draft control.

You are close to right, but to tweak your message a bit more, draft control is linked to the top link, and causes the 3pt arms to raise when the plow when the pull (translated to compression on the top link) exceeds the spring capacity. It is not really a replacement for a depth gauge wheel as you imply.
I don't mean this as a debate with you and what you believe, but for the rest of the readers that may not know, I thought your message should be clarified.

Draft control is the mechanical or electronic control of plow depth. Control of the plow depth is needed to maintain forward movement of the tractor. Some tractors use the top link and others use the lower lift arms. Most use the top link; some newer higher tech computer controlled tractors use the lower links. Draft is the pull placed on the tractor. When the draft control is set, the tractor will control the draft (or pulling force) on the tractor. As the composition of the ground changes to a harder or denser soil the draft control will lift the plow the amount needed to maintain the set amount of draft (pull). As the soil gets softer or less dense the plow will again return to the set position.

Hey, Professor, did I read your profile right? You collect Olivers? I have an Oliver 1550. What do you have? I see you also collect tractor toys. I'd love to get a toy 1550, and a toy Ferguson TO-20 (I have one of thosae, too). Any clues where to find them?

Thanks!!

I really like Yanmars but my favorites are Oliver tractors and crawlers. Presently I have a 1964 Oliver 550 with a Oliver 372 3 pt. cultivator. I show this tractor since its in perfect condition. As for toys I have approx. 200 . I have just about all the Oliver models 16ths and 64 that have been produced including the crawlers. I do not have a OC6 crawler yet.I do not remember a 1550 toy however Ertle did produce a 1555 in 16th and 64 scale. you can get the 16th scale TO20 from Western Toy Sales for approx 26.00. They may have the Oliver. Their number is 800 949 9964.Bossen equipment sells a lot of out of production toys very reasonable. They may can help with the Oliver. Their web site is www.bossenimp.com and phone is 563 924 2880. If you are looking for a custom made 1550 try Jensales at www.jensales.com phone507 826 3666. Your Oliver 1550 is an excellent tractor. I assume your tractor is a diesel. They made a gas and LP along with the diesel from 1965-69. In 1969 this tractor became the White-Oliver 1555 with 53 certified HP. Production ceased in 1971. I feel that Oliver was ahead of its time in tractor technology.

I was just over at a friend's house and he has one of the largest Oliver tractors I've seen. It's a 4wd monster...must be over 100 hp. Don't know the model number, but he has a blade for the front that would look right at home on a D8 cat.
As far as draft control goes, I have had it on several compact tractors, and frankly it never has worked well for me. I suppose if the field had absolutely consistent soil then it might work. But getting that touchy setting just right for the traction vs the draft on a compact tractor seems to be more trouble than it is worth.....as well as being likely to change in the next 10 yards anyway. I have seen draft control work a little better on heavy farm tractors pulling category 2 implements. But anyone can do the same thing with a deft touch on the 3pt lever.

Thanks for the info, Professor!! I really appreciate it!!

My Oliver 1550 is gas. I actually prefer gas over diesel. It's quieter and easier to start in cold weather. And if I run out of gas, I just fill it up, and move on without any trouble! I've posted a lot of pictures of it in the Vintage Tractors forum under: "My vintage workhorses", "Vintage tractors in action", and of course "Oliver 1550".
I was lusting after a gas Oliver (I prefered a 1550, but I was open to a number of models), and I got mine at an auction this spring. I absolutely love it!/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif
