I'm looking to buy a tandem 7,000lb trailer for my jd2520, would like to hear some pros and cons between the two. One of my concerns would be on loading the tractor with the front mounted snowblower on it. I'm thinking it would be easier with the dovetail, however I'm also worried about the back end draging as I have a steep incline to my back yard where I would need to store the trailer.

Personally, I don't care for dovetails just for that reason! Some of the places I use mine, I would be stuck because the dovetail would drag. Besides, in my case, it would be wasted space. As I use mine for a lot more than just hauling tractors. ~~ grnaspot

I have had both and prefer the flat deck on a low boy trailer. My trailer is 14" off the ground and my ramps are 5' long. I have had no issues loading anything including Corvettes that sit very low.

If you have a hill back the trailer up to it and load from there minimizing the angle. I was just at my sisters last week and did not even use my ramps with my tractor, FEL, and Bush Hog.

Look at a tilt deck. My uncle has one and it is real handy and easy to load.

I have a dovetail, and I bought it mainly because it didn't have the side rails. When I bought mine, I was looking at a flat deck beside it. I didn't measure them, but it looked like the bottom of the back end of both trailers was about the same height above the ground. In my mind, it didn't seem to matter which one you bought, they would both be about as likely to drag. Of course this all probably varies by the maker and style of the trailer.

My last 7K trailer had a dove tail and it drug due to the incline of our driveway. I got used to it but I never liked it.

if it's a lowbow.. as others mentioned.. DT may be a clearance problem.

if it's a deckover.. the DT helps with angle on loading.

when loading a passanger car on my deckover with DT, i have to law the ramp down on oil change ramps, and then law anout 4' of ramps from there to make an angle that a medium or small car can load from.

Just like any other tool... there's a trailer for every job. If you are hauling equipment dovetail is the way to go. Plus it makes it easier to step up on the trailer.

Look at Corn Pro trailers. Very nice.

The Corn Pro in the pic is a 14k 18 footer with 2+ dove tail. I haul lumber, etc on it too... never had any issues with the dovetail. When you're loading a 10K tracked bobcat or excavator... you will love the dovetail. Of course I'm sure the "experts" will tell ya different.

Good luck.

I have a 7000lb tandem 16fter with the dovetail. TO me and the tractor its still useable trailer. If i have something up front say a disk harrow, i have backed the tractor on with the bushhog and set the hog on the harrow and still had the front tires of the tractor on the DT part. No big deal i strap it down so its not going anywhere even if its on the hill.

I also have had a spring tooth harrow up front and driven on foward and then set my bushhog down on the trailer, but due to the BH hanging off the back and the lower DT section the tail wheel would hit the road, so to get around it i put my spare tire from the truck on the DT portion of trailer and then put a board across it and then set the BH onto that and strap it all down. It works for me and has not been a problem yet. Never dragged the DT on pavement but have on dirt etc, but i dont drive my tractor to often around the city on the trailer and pull in and out of to many p[arking lots with it. It maily goes into gas stations behind my thirsty K10 and maybe a fast food place here and there, but i am concious and try not to stop and places with steep drives off the pavement.
