1989 Ford 4610 Diesel
I need to replace the fuel filters on my 1989 ford 4610 diesel tractor. I can see the part number on the filter on the right but the part number has worn off the filter on the left. I was told that they are different filters with different parts numbers and that the filter on the left is to filter out water and larger particles and the one on the right is to filter smaller particles.. I have been searching online for hours trying to find out what filter I should get for the one on the left and have not been able to find it. Is there anyone here that can help me with that?

I have an owners manual but it doesn't have the parts listed. It really doesn't cover much except how to operate the tractor.

Sorry I can't help, but might suggest calling a NAPA store if ones available in your area. Sometimes they can look up older tractor parts.

Any New Holland tractor dealer should be able to help you.

Here is the WIX info you need. Both filter cartridges are the same. This style of fuel filter is common to most tractors of that era.

The filter is not a spin on style like a car oil filter, rather is is a cartridge that seals to the upper and lower parts of the filter assembly with rubber seals with the assembly squeezed together by a long center bolt..

On some of the lower cap for the filter cartridges there was a drain so you could drain and water out that settled in the filter. Usually it was the left filter as it was first in line.
Sometimes the lower cap was glass so you could see any water but these were often broken and replaced with metal so you cannot see any water accumulation

The WIX web site is: WIX Filters - Products Catalog Home
which has a where to find section to show you where their dealers are. Most dealers of other brands of filters can cross reference the WIX# to say FRAM
Note that the Napa # of 3166 is the same as the WIX # but WIX adds a 3 at the front so it is 33166.

Thank you! This is exactly the information I have been looking for. I checked with Oreilly's Auto parts store in my home town and they carry these filter's. I will be picking them up tomorrow!

Glad this is working out for you.

You will need to bleed the injection system when the new filters are installed.

Do you have instructions on how to do this?

I expect your tractor will have a mechanical lift pump on the side of the engine whose job it is to suck oil from the fuel tank, send it through the two filters on the way to the injection pump.

These lift pumps usually have a lever on the bottom to allow you to pump fuel into the filters without running the engine.
.
There may be somewhere on the top of the filter housing where you can loosen a fitting and as you hand pump in fuel air can escape before it gets to the injection pumps.

Done well this may avoid more involved bleeding of the injection system

Thanks for the added information. I didn't know I would need to do this.I checked my owners manual and there are instructions to bleed the diesel fuel system. The more I learn the more I find out what I don't know. I really appreciate the help.IMG_20171005_172606.jpg
