Well, our 4 yo Border Collie chased the wrong cat last night when she went out for the last time around 11:30 and apparently got a full spray in the face. It was bad, as in gag just to be near her bad. Found a recipe at several sites online (at 11:30 PM options are limited) using peroxide, baking soda, and dish detergent (we used Dawn). Recommended using gloves and paper towels to soak up as much excess oil (spray) as possible before beginning wash....there was some excess that did soak up. One thorough lather with this mix....perhaps 8-10 minutes of massaging her hair, with gloves on, and then the rinse with warm water. Absolutely amazing. Towels had to be tossed, gloves of course, but we then moved damp dog away from the cleanup site, towel dried her, sprayed her lightly with a lightly scented grooming spray and it was gone. Brought her in the house and neither of our sons could smell skunk....until they got near her mouth. Must have gotten some in her mouth. Gave her a few dog biscuits and it helped some. This morning she seems fine...I have never heard of anything to remove skunk odor so thoroughly.

My wife has a dog grooming biz. She gets a couple dozen per year. The worst are large dogs like golden retrievers, that have a lot of undercoat. You did good soaking up the oil before beginning the bath. Some skunks, maybe older ones, seem to have a more powerful spray. We have had people tell us that they let the dog in the house, where the dog rubbed up against furniture - lots of hard work getting that out. The formula sounds pretty much like what the wife uses. Good luck.

ive heard another way to get rid of the stink is tomatoe juice. My grandma's dog has got into a few skunks and tomatoe juice gets rid of the smell.

Had some experience with a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier that never seemed to learn. Given a choice between Tomato Juice and the OP's potion - go with the peroxide.

Sounds like a good recovery. Nice!

We have a small Schnauzer. Wife came and woke me up saying there was an electrical fire or something. Rushed downstairs to a strong skunk smell in the family room. Saw the dog scooting his face across the carpets at high speed. Skunk I said! Wife says-"No Way- No skunks here in the city". I pull the curtains and slid open the glass door and there it was-A huge Skunk. It was trapped inside our closed-off block wall. Don't know how it got in. Walked to the front-opened the side gate and in 15 minutes it had vanished.

What a mess we had cleaning up the dog and the carpets! Thanks for the recipe

Thanks for the recipe
It was actually a blessing rather than a discovery...the first three sites on the google list ALL showed the same recipe....one quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, 1 tspn dish detergent (we find Dawn particularly effective against oils, so that's what we had). Mix but do not confine in a closed container (it fizzes/expands). After soaking up as much excess oil with paper towels as possible, lather dog thoroughly in the mix...as I said, we (ok, my wife:eek:) spent probably 10 minutes rubbing this stuff through Molly's hair, then rinsed liberally with warm water. We were simply amazed. We had these ingredients, so we went with it, and are very glad we did.
