Dog eating grass question...

One of my dogs ate a bag full of arsenic that the previous owner left here for rats right after we moved in. I didn't even know it was there. I called the vet and she told me to force him to drink salt water real fast. It worked. He threw up all over the place and didn't get sick. It was a flour sack size bag of arsenic too and he ate almost all of it. That dog either has an iron stomach or has 9 lives.

For future reference...

As a puppy our dog got into rat poison.. After a quick call to the emergency vet they said to give him hydrogen-peroxide (about a teaspoon full).. Within minutes he was throwing up big time.. This got the poison off his stomach.. After a trip to the vet he got a tube of charcoal that was mixed with dog food to absorb any in the system that was digested.. Then vitamin K for a month to do something to protect him

I've always heard that eating grass means they need worming, but I've also seen dogs that were well wormed eat grass. So I don't know.

If you want to see something funny, watch one that has eaten a peach seed. The going down ain't funny, but the coming out is hilarious.

I used to take BEAR out driving all the time as a puppy he seemed to like it but only up to 20 min drive then he would get car sick. now it is so much less time he actually LIKES going to the VET as he gets lots of attention from the girls there and dog biscuits from the vets as well as gets to play with other pets...


He is just an ODD DUCK tonight he spent most of day locked up as we went to my sisters, and was over charged all night so far he ate 2 pop bottles (Empties with cap on tight, but have to watch so he can't get them loose) he pounces on them and they SQUISH out like they are shot from a water rocket pad! lol. and off he goes chasing em, the 2 ltr bottles are best to watch with a coating of Ice/Snow as he can't get a hold of anything ... It's funny watching him carry one like he is drinking from it! the Water Bottles are too cheap he simply tore one apart in about 2 hrs tonight...

No word on anyone finding WOLFIE still Stolen.
I also forgot to say that they eat grass for stomach achs worms and or many digestive problems... (as told to me by Vet long time ago.)

I posed your question to a buddy who is a professional dog trainer up in canada. He runs a search and rescue/narcotics detection/ attack on command company, and really knows dogs. Here's his reply:

Dogs are not true carnivores (cats are) dogs are omnivores and need/want vegetable matter. Wolves taking down their prey go for the plant matter laden stomach as their first choice. Some of them (human included) can over eat a product till it makes them sick. Thusly...........

There are lots of opinions but they all boil down to.... Some people drink responsibly, some drink till they puke, both do it cause it makes them feel good....

A teaspoon of salt into the back of the mouth is better than ipecac for getting the dog to spew anything bad out of its system. (Like the lab puppy who got into a bag of dog food and had a stomach the size of a bowling ball and very uncomfortable.)

Seen dogs that like grass to eat (search and pick for certain plants)
and others only when got into something and are in stomach distress (anything green will do, just not the tractor).
