I was looking up diesel prices and came across this

Diesel Secret Energy - Alternative Biofuel Biodiesel

I have seen stories on 20/20 or other such shows that talk about this. Anyone use it or have comments about it?

I don't have any personal experience with it, but I have not heard anything good about diesel secret. This is one of many threads about it on the biodiesel board.

I do run 100% biodiesel in my tractor without any problems.

I looked into that some time ago, then dropped my interest. I can't recall all the details, but the net is that if it seems too good to be true, then it is not true from a practical use standpoint.

without reading much of it, it looks like a kit to make home biodiesel.

you get used fryer oil from restaraunts and you convert it with the chemical they sell, that would be my take on it.

if you do a web search on homemade biodiesel, you'll come up with a bunch of ideas.

I run up to 20% bio in my Ford Powerstrokes and tractors. I have had no problems. I am afraid to use more than 20% due to the gelling in my cold part of the country.

What I don't understand is if I have to buy this additive to convert the vegtable oil to biodiesel then how am I being fuel independant?

Good reading at Mother Earth News on the subject of bio-diesal fuel. I have a friend that makes his own but the problem is washing the fuel and what to do with the water after you are done! I would love to be able to burn non-taxed ag fuel in my VW Jetta.

Well, the Environmentalist who runs a large Biodiesel plant in our town disposed of the wash water by putting it in the town sewer... And clogged up the pipes at the treatment plant. He thought that everyone was "cool" with what he did. Talk of tens of thousands of dollars to clean up the mess and fines for him. I have not heard the final result.

Then he got caught illegally changing his voter registration so he could vote in the town election. I'm sure he thought everyone was "cool". :D

I have heard that some people sell the wash water since its full of fat. Make some soap to was the truck and tractor that burns the biodiesel? :D

Later,
Dan

What you are adding is methanol at approx 20% by volume to the vegie oil. This and a bit of caustic soda (or similar chemicals) turns the long molecules of the oil to shorter molecules of biodiesel and leaves a by product that is biodegradable. You are being fuel independant by approx 80%.

I run 3 vehicles and 2 tractors on used cooking oil. I started in May of 2005.
There are not magic additives.
DSE is a blend of light hydrocarbons. Like adding k 1 and acetone.
I select good clean oil filter it and then have 2 tank systems. Start and shut down on diesel and run on clean used vegetable oil. The oil tanks have coolant lines (PVC) running thru them to heat the oil to near coolant temps.

I repeat DSE and every other additive is not needed.
I do not make biodiesel. I burn clean vegetable oil in a systematic and controlled manner.
The result is it cost nothing to drive all day.
I save 100 per week on fuel?
