Kubota l4330
You have never heard a tractor clank and rattle just sitting at idle like one of these. I just can't seem to get the thing to shift without noise, grinding, and effort. The forward/reverse lever is on left side column and the 1-4 (5-8) is on right side column. I have adjusted the clutch and linkages and it still shifts rough, always has. Once it gets going it's fine, but changing gears is effort. I'm wondering if it's the "EverClutch" or a problem.
Thanks

Kubota's first wet clutch was the hydraulic shuttle in the L355ss. It was smooth, positive and reliable. They increased its size and power capacity - offering the beefed up version in several tractor models as the EverClutch. They were confident enough in it to eliminate the dry plate travel clutch, relying on the EC to do all the clutching. This setup has proven to be durable so there's little reported trouble with them. Occasionally valve linkage needs adjustment but even that is rare.
Like any wet clutch, if the EC is abused and overheated it may be damaged so it drags in neutral and causes symptoms like you describe. Repair can mean splitting the tractor and rebuilding the hydraulic clutch packs. This thread by Clint in CT has a lot of related information. He rebuilt the EC in his L4850. Take care, DickB

Thanks for the reply. Did they stop making the ECs?

Some of the M-series models are offered with a hydraulic shuttle. The design function is like the EC, with multi-disc wet clutch packs for forward and reverse. I don't think hydraulic reversers are offered on L's any more. Glide Shift and HST are the options to straight dry-clutch gear drive. Only the pto clutches are hydraulic. Maybe someone with more current product knowledge will chime in.

The tractor is 22 years old and does the job(s) but makes a lot of racket compared to the HSTs and GSTs. Also, I don't see many posts on ECs on this forum- so I guess either they don't have problems or they discontinued them.

Right, there were very few problems. Only the name is discontinued - that type of clutch is still used today but they don't call it the EC any more - they just call it a hydraulic shuttle.
