Stumbled across this tidbit tonight:

Judge Flooded With Calls

Phones at the office of Oklahoma Federal Judge Lee West rang off the hook after his initial ruling against the list.

People flooded West's office and home with angry calls and faxes, making it clear they're not happy with his decision.

It didn't help that West's home and office telephone numbers were posted on the Internet. Calls by The Associated Press to West's home seeking comment were blocked by busy signals.

The ruling also made television talk show host Jay Leno's monologue. Leno joked that viewers should call West at home during dinner.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

When I get an unsolicited telemarketer call, I always let them get one sentence out and then say "can you hold on just a second?", lay the phone down and go about my merry way. Don't know how long they wait...don't care. Always gone when I come back to the phone in a few minutes. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I signed up for the list. You can't convince me that it is unconstitutional, I did have to opt in, didn't I? The only problem I have with it is the exemptions, I don't want to talk to charities, pollsters or politicians, either! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I believe the constitutional issue deals with the first ammendment rights of the person(s) making the calls, not the person being called.

The telemarketers should LOVE this list. The people who signed up for the DO NOT CALL list will NEVER buy anything from a telemarketer, so when they have a list of people to call after October 1, they know they "have a chance".

At the current time -- I have CALL INTERCEPT, a feature offered from my phone company that will not let calls through that block their calling information. Anyone that really wants to talk to me in these cases must record their voice and allow me to accept/decline the call. ZERO sales calls in the past 18 months using this service -- LOVE IT!

dieselsmoke1 et al:

Life in an insane asylum. Everyone wants their little way - no concern about the VICTIMS who have to pay for it.

What about the small business that occasionally makes calls and can't afford spending $30,000 per year to purchase the list and weeks and weeks correlating it with their prospect lists? What about the 100,000s of jobs that would be erased (they'll tax you to pay for their unemployment benefits)? What about the FEAR engended in a small business that's worried about an $11,000 FINE because they accidently made a call to someone on the list. No, you people don't care about that do you.

Do you think any business wants to waste time calling people who are not going to buy their product? If no one made purchases from phone solicitors, how long do you think these type of calls would continue? Years and years ago I added code to toggle a "no call" status to my computer records. If someone tells me not to call them they are toggled no call - when their record comes up the computer beeps and a red "This person has requested a do not call status" comes up on the screen. That's perfectly adequate - it protects anyone from getting unwanted calls from me, and, it protects me against wasting time calling them.

Anyone of you that supports this, without any grasp of its actual effects, what it entails and its real purpose, well, all I can say is you have no idea of the contempt I feel for you.

PS When I get unsolicited calls I tell them they have 30 seconds to convince me to listen to them. If they can tell me in 30 seconds how I will benefit from what they have I will listen. Most cannot. Sometimes, they can and it is sometimes it is something I might be interested in.

I agree with Grimreaper on this one. There are many other ways to address this 'problem' than the government getting involved. I know people who have been let go from their telemarketing jobs in anticipation of this legislation taking effect.

We have CallerID and if I do not recognize the name, it says Out of Area, or Private Caller, I let the answering machine screen the call.

If I happened to pick up an Out of Area call (some of our relatives show up on the display like this) and it's a telemarketer, I listen to see what they're selling. If I am not interested, I tell them that, I say thanks for calling, then hang up.

The only law that never needed to be passed and will never be repealed is the Law of Unintended Consequences and there were a number of unintended consequences associated with this legislation.

P.S.
Any time I see that almost all politicians are in favor of something, my early warning radar kicks in. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You're exactly right. If that means I am to be judged along with countless thousands of others as being callous or ignorant, so be it. I feel so strongly about this I bought a "TeleZapper" as soon as they came out and it has helped.

I made the mistake several years ago of donating to a worthy cause in response to a telemarketer's call. Apparently my name and phone number immediately went out nationwide as an "easy mark" and I was deluged with unsolicited requests, some even getting beligerant because I gave a donation to "X" and not to them.

I know I"ve gotten off telemarketing sales and into telemarketing fund raising, but they all kinda blur together to me.

Yes, marketing companies have the right to use any legal means possible to get their message across and I have absolutely no problem with this. I do regret the potential loss of income and employment for those directly affected. If the telemarketing industry would and could police themselves and not bother those of us that request so, I don't care if the law ever passes.

Maybe one way to take care of the problem would be to make them get rid of the automatic computer dialing.
