In Mass. they have changed the rules in where it is required. It now reads picking something up over ten feet, or over 500 lbs yes 500 lbs etc. regardless if it is on your own land or not, there is a clause for agricultural use. I intend on digging my foundation. Has anyone else run into this requirement?

I am purchasing a TC-30 with loader and backhoe

I have never heard of such a thing! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Does one of these licenses cost MONEY$$$?
If it does than I believe it.

/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Excuse me for laughing, but you need an operators license to run a tractor/loader on your own land?? I'm sorry, but that's just flat-out ridiculous. Do they require state approved training for running a lawn mower, too? How about a dishwasher? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

With the 500 lb lift limit, there are people who would need a license to lift weights! We have kids on our high school football team who leg press more than that. One bench presses a bit over 400.

I find it kind of sadly pathetic that the states where they made the most noise about freedom a couple of hundred years ago are the same ones where individual liberties are now most restricted. Next thing you know, you'll be outlawing red tractors since the state went blue in the last election.

As a person who holds one Mass License (an unrestricted Contruction Supervisors's license) I can tell you that getting a Hoisting License is a very non-trival undertaking. You need a sponsor and realtime experience on all the classes of machines you want to be certified on.

I tend to doubt that it is required on your own property though.

LarryRB has an unrestricted hoisting license in Mass and perhaps can be of assistance to you.

Check this link out, from the state. it is very specific, including all back hoes, and front end loaders. www.mass.gov/dps/he00.htm

I am going to speak with the new holland dealer as well.

If you rent a small machine from home depot or any other place, they are to give you a one hour class and issue you a temporary (14 day license) on file of course with the state. yes even on your own land. Don't shoot the messenger. I will talk to a few more people and report back.

Dave

ps. it was a machine operator on a job site who told me i would need one.

I just went on the web and reviewed the regulations for the Hoisting license. I was unable to locate any info regarding actual weights, etc. The regulations appear to be like they have been for years.

I ran construction equipment in Mass, both on my own property and commercially for over 25 years and was never once asked for a hoisting license. I know they are routinely looked for on large commercial jobs and state jobs, but I suspect that you will never be asked to show one using a tractor around your property, be it a farm or not. They are also routinely looked for when an actual crane is involved.

Just my thoughts. Andy

I'm glad to hear the consensus of opinion is that you only need the license if you go commercial. That make a certain amount of sense. I wouldn't want someone running heavy equipment on my property unless they had a certain amount of skill.

I just hope things never get to the point where you need something like that to do your own work with your own equipment at your own place.

I have to agree!!!!

The only thing "blue" about me is my Ford tractor and my jeans of course! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

You do know Fords used to be red/gray until they started selling off the tractor division, don't you? All the older classic Fords are red. A nickname for the Ns in some circles is "red belly".

I don't imagine there's any parallel there with national politics. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
