I need a new battery for my 3540. I know from posts here that the 26R battery can be replaced by a 24 series. My current battery (the original Kubota battery) is the sealed type. Do I have to replace with a sealed/maintenance free/AGM type? I can't find one anywhere locally (I know I can mail order an optima).

I'd rather have an AGM, since the tractor sometimes sits for a few months, but the 'regular' wet cells are easier to find, easier to charge with a solar trickle charger, etc.

Something about the closeness to the radiator requiring a sealed battery? Or mowing steep hills?

As long as the caps are tight and there is good circulation you should be all set. Tractors have been run for decades with regular old batteries. Just keep an eye out for corrosion and flush it with water/baking soda if it appears.
