Is there a tool That I can put between the spark plug and the wire that will tell me if I'm getting spark from the coil. Some times you have to work on a small engine out in the bright sunlight. and by the time you pull a starter rope or push a starter button you are to far away from the spark plug st see if fire is jumping on it. I would think there is something that you could hook up to the plug wire and crank and it would let you know if you had any fire or not. Has any one got any ideas . thanks

Just get the neighbor kid to hang on to it while you pull the rope.

Yep, if the neighborhood kid is not available, they sell spark testers at Harbor Freight for a couple of bucks.

I have always just remove the plug, attached it to the wire and held the plug against the engine so it's grounded, you can see the spark.

Get the wife to hold on to it! Just don't plan on any 'intimancy' in the near future.............Nah get a tester, but I do the 'KennyD' route. With the plug out, and no compression, they 'roll-over' pretty easy.........~Scotty

G'day we used to make our own just get a new plug and hose clamp it to an alligator clip then you can clip it to anywhere that has a good ground

Back when I was in shop the shop teacher would have had a lot of trouble trying to get anyone to hold on to the plug wire!

Although a little off subject , The comments about using the neighbors kid or wife reminded when I tried to use my Father-in-laws electrical meter to check my electric fence .:ashamed:

Shoved the Ground wire into the dirt , Set the dial to the highest DC rating , and then touched the red probe to the fence . Needle made 3 pops to the full right then died !!! :(

We , ( as in BOTH ME and MY Wife ) , placed meter back in the box and returned it to my Father-in-law . He tried to use it for something a couple of months later but No-Go . Since it was still under warranty from a large tool company , they checked it out . Their exact words were according to him " Boy , its a good thing you did not try to use that , something was really wrong with it . All kinds of melted diodes on the board " .

He got a new meter free and we came clean on what we did .
