My nephew in VA (near DC) used to shoot garden-marauding deer with his paintball gun. All the deer in the neighbourhood had weird colored blotches, but I don't think it really discouraged them from their garden raids.

I have a quick, clarifying question for those of you who have cranes raiding your ponds. What species of crane are you referring to, or, do you mean Great Blue Heron? The GBH is the wader that nabs fish in my pond/stream.

That is an interesting point. It could be Aliens. ( I thought they didn't like water - "Signs" - movie with Mel Gibson)

Besides you would think they would catch live catfish , clean them in mid air and deposit the bones on the banks. I guess they could be lazy alliens and want me to do the work for them.

You are correct. Although vegetation makes up the largest percentage of their diet, they will eat mussels, frogs, fish, small turtles, and crayfish-we call them crawdads.

Actually you are right in my case. What I have been dealing with is a Heron, but I think it is the (LBH) Lesser Blue Heron. If I'm right, I have never seen a Greater BH. This one is about 40" tall and most certainly thinks he can whip my butt. He is constantly insisting that I have nothing in my bag of tricks that can keep him away. We'll see..........
