About a year ago I purchased a house on 5 acres and really need a tractor for this and that. I am getting ready to buy my first tractor and I'm a bit nervous. I have never bought a new car, but I know you are never suppose to pay sticker price....is this true about tractors? I am wanting a 2816 gear driven Mahindra. It was the financing options that attracted me, but now it's the tractor that I want. Dealer price is $14,400 with financing, $13,900 cash price. He's given me a couple prices on implements, which might have been discounted. Like a 54" tiller for $1200 and a 4' box blade for $400.

What do you suggest as far as making offers??? Not trying to kill him on price, just kinda looking for the norm. This is my first post, but I have been looking for a couple weeks and everything looks great.

Thanks,
Matt

one thing you might do is see if he's got a demo model he can drop the price on. Another way to save a few $$ is to get him to agree in writing that your 50 hour service will be covered for free. (worth about $75 or so just in materials, plus labor)
There is usually some wiggle room, but no idea of how much, as some of that depends on how much interest and property tax he's had to pay having it on the lot.

depending on where you are, if there is another Mahindra dealer within 150 or so miles, see what kind of package deal they would give you.

good luck!

I am from Wichita and Straub International has all the Mahindras. I called one about 40 miles away and later got a call from the one here in Wichita and told me it that it will not help to shop around because prices among Straub International's are all the same.

Find other dealerships that offer Mahindra, Kabota, Kioti, Deere, NH Massey,etc...

Don't get pressured into feeling that there are no other choices.

Good luck!

you may want to give them the internet address of tractorbynet.com and tell them that technology will allow you to find the lowest price and whether their price is the "best deal" for you----price and service matters but smart-elic salesmen/women can take a hike in this economy!

I know you didn't ask this question, but I would suggest that you seriously consider a Hydrostatic Transmission (HST). Sort of like an automatic transmission in a car. Especially since this is your first tractor and you have 5 acres.

Essentially gear driven tractors are better at moving "ground engaging implements" like a plow. HST is better at most other things.

For a first tractor on 5 acres, an HST might be a far better choice.

Matt,
Erik and I both know Bill over there quite well. I am sure he is giving you a decent price. My only question is on the box blade. I don't thing 4 ft will cover the wheel track, but maybe that's not that important. It's been a week or so since I last talked to Bill. I am over due for a call. :D

OK - if you were from KC, I was going to suggest you try Straub in Wichita. OTOH, if you want an eye opener, check the prices at Blue Valley in KC. In November BV quoted me a higher price on a 3316 than I gave Straub for my 3510 - and Straub's hauled it from Larned to Wichita to give it a bath and a quick checking out, then up to Topeka for free.
I also went back and checked my saved mail - the price quoted you is pretty close to what I was quoted in Nov for a 2815 gear, and there was a price increase after I picked my machine up, so I'm pretty sure he's giving you a pretty solid bid. HST will likely run about $1500 higher.
My other advice still stands - check with Bill to see if they have a demo model at one of their other dealerships that he could cut you a deal on.

Thanks for all the advice. I will try and answer some questions and respond to some of the replies. I am pretty set on a gear driven tractor. I do plan on using the tractor to move dirt and run other implements more than anything. I want to dig a pond this summer and fill in a lot of low spots (and build some burms) throughout the property. At this point, I do not plan on mowing/bushhogging with it. I am in the lawn care business and have dedicated mowers that can handle that. As far as the box blade goes....it might have been a 5ft...not real sure about that one. I know Bill was suggesting the 54" tiller and that I questioned about covering the tracks. I have found some pretty good internet deals, but I would really like to stay local if possible.

Thanks again,
Matt

All dealers if they are smart will put wiggle room in their price, but they need to make some money also.

Take my advice don't just look at price, look at the service from the dealer and the manufacture. We just went and purchased and have had headaches for a while.

when I went shopping this year I was really looking for a New holland as I liked the look have friends that have had good luck in the past and thought it was what I wanted. However I decided to check all of the tractors out give em a shot and see what fit best. I ran into a problem here where all the dealers in the area around me are now one company, stopped and talke to the NH dealer in town, went to the nearest Kubota dealer talked to him, asked for a written price quote for what I wanted. Then the next day I got a call from the NH dealer in my town He said he could no longer deal with me as the parent company owned the Kubota dealer as well and they can not compete with one another, well I got prices on John deere Bobcat (Kiota does not have a dealership in ND) and then from Cub Cadet Yanmar just on a flook as I had no idea about the tractor
drove them all and ended up with the ccyanmar just for the fit
course the price helped too
I was so turned off by the big company owning dealerships for 3 manufacures and refusing to allow the different brands to compete my whole plan went out the window

You won't beat that price (or if so, not by much) at any full service dealer. You might find a little lower price from an internet lowballer somewhere or a dealer going out of business or something, but from a stocking full service dealer (as all should be) that is a real fair price and Bill is a very good guy to deal with. Rest assured you've done well and make the purchase.

Bill and I toured the Mitsubishi plant in Japan earlier this year on a trip with a few other Mahindra dealers, so I got to spend some time with him. I was impressed with his work ethic and dedication.

Matt....are you really asking if the dealer is making any money off of you? If that is what you are really asking....then let me ask you this question. So you honestly think that any dealer can survive and service many of the perpetual complainers WITHOUT making a profit? You have read some and seen some....you know, "I purchased a (name your brand of tractor) about six years ago, and I noticed the other day that it had several deep scratches in the paint. Now the dealer will not warranty the work, what should I do?"....

Any and every dealer worth their salt will try to make as much money off of you as they can. They are not in business for some altruistic reason like making friends. They are in business for one reason....making money. Is there wiggle room built in to the price??? Oh with that last statement in mind...the answer would be YES!!! Is that a crime???? Maybe in this day and age, but for two hundred plus years of our history...NO!!! Are you going to get the best buy??? Who knows!!! You will purchase the tractor and implements when you think that the price is right for YOU!!!

I suppose as you can see by my response that this continual wondering if some dealer made a few bucks off of someone, drives me crazy!!! Buy the tractor or don't buy it....but for gosh sakes stop the insanity of wondering if someone made a profit off of you.

Bill and I toured the Mitsubishi plant in Japan earlier this year on a trip with a few other Mahindra dealers, so I got to spend some time with him. I was impressed with his work ethic and dedication.

I looked at the pretty orange tractors 2 blocks down the road from Bill before showing up on his lot. I liked the orange ones a lot, but the salesman left me feeling cold. (and his delivered price to Topeka was higher than Wallace's!)
Then I went to talk to Bill, and while he didn't have what I was looking for on his lot, he found it at another dealership, gave me a rough estimate on price and promised to try and do better once he had more info on the unit -- and sure enough, he did beat his own price. (and the orange one I had looked at by a considerable margin)
And just this week I found another reason to help justify why the competition's price didn't feel right.

If you really don't feel that you're getting the best deal possible from Bill, shop around - get prices on other new machines in the area and go look at tractorhouse to see what kind of prices things are going for used.

Is there wiggle room in the price.... depends on the business plan of the owner. I absolutely hate, hate, hate, hate horse trading with every cell of my body. It tells me you dont value my time if the only way I can get a fair deal is to go back and forth. This isnt a yard sale with aunt Sara's lamp, this is a big ticket item and all I want to know is the straight price. So my business plan is a bit different. I put the price I will take in bold numbers on each tractor and that is the price. Period. Just like Wal-Mart or McDonalds. The price is clearly marked and it will be the same for you as even the best "dicker job guy" that walks through the door. Cash, finance, credit cards all the same price. I never have a package price and I never have a sale. Some guys love to haggle and the good news is there are plenty of dealers willing to jerk that guy around, throw him every gimmick in the book and spit him out the back door dazed and confused.

At 13900.00 unless it was assembled and delivered by fairies in the middle of the night for free he is selling the tractor for cost. So like Dave said unless you find an internet dead beat who can not do math or a dealer going out of business you will be hard pressed to find a better price especially since retail price is $17510.00.

not familar with mahindra but that seems like a great price for a 28 hp gear. as far as the bb 400 for a 5' box depending on brand is fair especially from a dealer. and 1200 for a tiller is also excellent from a dealer. any idea who makes the implements? the brand depents on the price, since places like tsc sells implements.
