Massey 1652 HST Cab
Another Massey shopping question for you guys. The DL130 has nice specs, but the listed breakout force seems lower than the competitors. Like, quite a bit lower. The breakout @ the pins is just above 3000lb... 1000-1500lbs less than other brands.

Are you guys happy & impressed with the loader? Is there anything disappointing about it? Do you find out running out of lift or curl force .. . And do you find the breakout force to be inadequate?

I really like that 1648 cab, just want to make sure it would handle the loader work I'd be throwing at it should I buy one.

Thanks in advance

I have had to rebuild a 1643 front axle that broke in the right front section of the 4WD, 2 months later I seen it again and the clutch was out on it. Its the only one I have ever seen trouble out of with that front end on it. I know that man that owns it overworks his equipment. Depending on what you are going to be doing with it depends on the amount of issues you will have. Just dont try hauling around boulders that weigh several thousands pounds and then blame the tractor when it breaks. I think that are a great little machine.

I appreciate the response. So... being that I use my tractors for 75% +++ for loader work, would you recommend against the Massey 1648?

Im not saying that you shouldnt buy it. But I will say that seeing the tractor in your signature concerns me that you have a Grappler. It is really easy to overwork a tractor with a grappler and not realize you are doing it. The previous broken front end had a grappler on it at the time and like I said earlier, he was picking up large boulders that was well outside the safe weight limits of the front end.

I just seen a brand new 1759 or 1769 (i cant exactly remember which one it was, but think it was the 59) go out the door with a loader on it. Its a tier 4 motor. Fuel tank has been moved down low, and it has the catalytic burn off feature in it. It has the bigger beefier front end under it and I have only seen one of those front ends break in 3 years.
To answer your question, I think the 1648 would make you glad that you own it. Just dont make a habit of over loading the grapple or the bucket and you will probably never have an issue with it.

I appreciate you taking the time to respond ... but there are lots of folks that run grapples on their tractors. Shouldn't the system be designed to handle the weight/force? I mean, if the brochure says it lifts 2500 lbs, why should it be a concern to lift that much?

Ah but its not the 2500 lbs thats a problem. Let me put it this way. I can tell you are somewhat of a more level headed guy than most. Here is why - you dont own this tractor/front end loader yet, but you already know that lifting limit of the machine and its components. Your the guy that's not the problem.

Its the guy that has no judge of weight, and/or no care, or an employee who dont care (its not their money) and picks up something that weights 3500 and moves it a little bit to get it onto a trailer. Next time he picks up something that heavy or heavier and moves it a greater distance. Then they decide to heck with the trailer, I will load it and drive it the entire way and breaks something and somehow finds it in their DNA to blame the tractor.

Trust me I see it all the time. As long as you stay withing the working limit of the operating specs you will be happy with it. There are some folks out there that dont think that way. I have seen a video taken from a cell phone of a 1643 picking up something that I know in my heart weighted 4,000 lbs. minimum and thats the kind of people that give good tractors a bad name. The funny thing about it was that there was a large twin steer forklift sitting in the background that could have been used but they chose to run a mid size tractor at red line rpms to do something foolish.

The ONLY problem I have seen with these tractors you are considering is that when you install the stereo, the antenna is designed to mount just above the left fender and the stereo does not pick up anything at all with it located there because the cab frame blocks all signals. Maybe if you have a station locally you might get it but chances are you will not. I have drilled a hole in the Left rear worklight or flasher mounting plate (dont remember which one) and it let the tip of the antenna ride about 3-4 inches above the cab and it made all the difference in the world. I then laid the antenna on the strip of foam insulation when i remounted the roof and it sealed when I tightened it down without issue. The reason I kept it low was that it was going on a tractor commited to running a bushhog mower and I knew if I roof mounted it, it would end up broke off.

Thanks again MasseyWrench . With all of that in regard, why does Massey list such a substantially lower breakout force than everyone else? They can lift a competitive amount higher than most of the competition, and they clearly have some of the best hydraulics ... I just can't wrap my head around the breakout numbers they post.

For example, both Kubota & TYM have competing tractors in the same size and class as the 1648, and they all have the same maximum lift capacity to about the same height. However, the Kubota list about a 1000 lbs higher breakout rating at the pins, and the TYM lists about 2000 lbs more.
