I was contemplating buying a 2010 DK90 (Perkins engine) from a dealer with 190 hrs on it. One problem however, he states that it smokes on start up and also when under heavy load. Concerened about this because it is his own personal tractor, he contacted a Kioti rep about this condition. The rep informed him that this was semi-normal due the break-in period being about 400 hrs. The reason that the break-in period is so high, is that supposedly Perkins engines have a very rough finish on there cylinder walls. Anybody have any input on this tid bit of information--- fact or fiction? Should I stay away from this particular tractor? from all DK90s? from all Perkins engines?:confused:

If it were me I'd want to talk to other Perkins owners and Kioti DK 90 series owners to determine if what you have been told holds any validity. AND why is the owner selling his?
The hard cylinder walls theory sounds fishy but its hard to know for sure without that engine's familiarity. I'd search this site too for further owner info that might help you decide.Do not be hasty in your decision_ there are other DK-90's out there too. You could ask for a detailed engine oil analysis from an independent lab on the Perkins engine to tip the scale in your favor.

Just my thoughts on engines, to be new and have oil consumption is normal to a degree, same as when they get on the other end of their life cycle.

The smoke which could be from over fueling will not allow the engine to break in as quickly as if it wasn;t over fueled. A very over fueled diesel or one run cold will never seat the rings to the cylinders and will cause a problem called glazed cylinders! You can see the cross hatch of a nice cylinder but to run your finger nail up it and expect to feel them, sorry but it will be like they have glass over the cylinders. This could be happening from just one injector that is leaking by at to low of a pressure.

At that it might never break in, I'd hate to think that the grooves on the cylinder couldn't be cut a little finer and allow less blow by seat in sooner.

I would wonder if this is typical of that model perkins engine. Some diesels do smoke more then others even with in the brand. So I would verify and I'm quite sure that someone here will let you know their experience with that model.

My 1974 Massey has a Perkins engine...1974 and it still runs great! It has always smoked a little at startup and under heavy load...that's normal.

I test drove several DK90 machines when they first came out. None of them demonstrated what you described. Since I had a bit to drive to the dealer, he allowed me to use the FEL and move some dirt in a large pile he had behind his building. Again, none of what you described. I'd pass on that particular machine. I do not think it is normal for the Perkins nor any Kioti product.

Thanx for the input guys. I think I'm going to pass on this particular tractor. Actually I'm now leaning toward a 2011 LS 7030S.These tractors are very similar to the Kiotis and supossedly made in a factory right next door to the Kioti factory in S. Korea. Some of the smaller LS tractors even had Daedong engines in them. The 7030S has an Iveco engine in it and seems to have all the bells & whistles that us spoiled Americans want for a reasonable price, not to mention a 5yr warranty.:D
