DK55C won\'t start

Went out to get some seat time and my tractor wouldn't start. I opened the drain on the fuel filter to check for water and there was none. White smoke comes out of the exhaust while trying to start. I read on the Mahindra forum that this was a sign of the glow plugs not working and to check the fuse. I can't find a fuse labeled "glow plug", and anything that resembles that description has a good fuse.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. The tractor isn't quite two years old yet. I haven't contacted the dealer yet.

Is your glow plug light on the dash coming on?

Yes it does. It stays on for 20 seconds or so. The dealer mechanic suggested a new fuel filter. They didn't have one. It will take a week to get it. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
By the way, the solenoid works normally too.

Have you check your air filter to make sure it is not clogged to the point it is not getting any air and not able to complete combustion?

Yes I have. I can see light through it. I tried starting without the air filter in place also.

how cold does it get down there? how strong is the battery?

try this:

- engage the glow plugs 1 cycle, then turn off key
- repeat, and try staring it
- do NOT give is throttle until it runs for 20 seconds+

i realize your temp is not as cold as new hampshire, but i recently switched my starting procedure when i had trouble getting it going one cold morning (i am not using a block heater).

btw, white smoke is normal when i start mine... it disappears as the engine temp increases.

Also we have had a couple of the 55's that the shut of cable was getting caught and not allowing the shut off switch return to the full open position.
The ferrule that is on the end of the cable gets caught on a cable bracket.


Also you have a temp sensor on the theromostate housing that will also work in the glow plug accativation.

Hi,
As long as you are getting fuel and air to the engine I think
you need to check the nut on the strip of the first glow plug for voltage with a test light. If the light comes on check the next glow plug and so-on. I have had one or two customers that have had a bad connection where the wire connects to the strip that feeds power to the glow plugs. (very similar symtoms) As was mentioned by psuesdofarmer you can cycle the glow plugs several times.

PS. You will need someone to turn the key on and off to cycle the glow plugs, the test light won't work once the dash light goes out.
Chances are that if the tractor ran OK when you put it up, you will not find water in the fuel.

Might sound stupid but try removing the air filter and pumping some hot air in the air intake with a heat gun or a hair dryer. If it starts you just have to eliminate why the glow plugs aren't working.
