Anyone got any website/plans/specifics on making a filter preceding a pump for pumping lake water to an irrigation system ? I know in general about using a three foot 4 inch diameter piece of pvc capped at the ends with little holes drilled in it and an internal piece of pvc with slots in it and filter screen wrapped around it. I'm looking for more details, like what kind of screen and where to get it, how to best afix it around the inner pvc, fittings, maybe alternative filter material instead of screen, dimensions and numbers of holes/slots, or maybe another type of design, etc., etc.
Thanks for any information,
Bob

In your area you might do pumping different than we do. I would suggest you look on your Gov Ag site for pumping options. How big is the pump and what is the water source?

One thing to note that any thing that is sifting / filtering water will clog up. so you need to make a few things happen make it easy to clean out. Make it easy to get to and work on..

other options are to dig a trench starting out in the pond back to shore drop in a large PVC pile vertically into the trench with a 90 fitting on the end. Run a 2nd pipe out into the pond slightly and cap it with a lot of small /medium holes in it. then fill the trench in with larger gravel and a 2nd layer of smaller gravel & sand on top. then drop your intake piping down into the large PVC pipe. We did this and used the water in a cabin for pretty much everything cept drinking. worked great. though FLOW was not real high needs in the cabin it worked well for washing showering and flushing without issue and after 6 or 7 years was used for less as a well was put in. The pump used was a JET style pump though a submersible pump would work with the pipe put in at an angle in the trench then filled leaving the outlet pipe coming out only..

as far as hole sizes you total area of HOLES needs to be about 200% of the area of the discharge piping to keep drainage/gravity flow coming into the filter pipe..

See the L I N K - this is a simple fish filter but should work for your needs as well. Great website by the way!

I took a 15gal barrel laid it flat, cut holes in the top, put my suction hose through the side{opposite top holes}, drilled many small holes and wrapped with screen, then covered the suction pipe with small rocks{filled the barrel 3/4 full. This sits on the bottom and I've never had any issues with clogs.
