I noticed on the LandPride web site a disc harrow (never heard term harrow before. What is it?) that is 60 inches.

No HP minimums were mentioned. Can anyone recommend a disc implement that could be used by a JD 4300 off the PTO?

Thanks all again,

Rob

A harrow is usually a toothed frame used to drag over the ground to break up clods of dirt, and help level plowed ground for seeding. As it is pictured in the Landpride.com site, it is a frame equipped with discs (blades) either toothed or smooth, that will break up ground and also do some leveling. We used to just call it a disc, but the term harrow seems to be more descriptive. It isn't PTO driven, but will attach to the 3pt cat I, or II. The 4300 should handle the 60 disc harrow with ease. Hope that helps answer your question.

I use a 5' IH disc with a concrete slab on it for added weight. My 4300 will handle a 6' disc with no problem just get the heaver frame unit than I have.

Who makes your disc? Does it use the PTO? Can one man put it on (one weak man)? How much does it weigh?

The disc I have is a older International. 3 point (no PTO) It is only a 5' model so it barely cover the tractor tracks well one day I get into a 6' one. There not hard to hook up, if done right the tractor does all the work. Weight? I have a concret block on it for weight I would guess 700LBS.

I am clueless so forgive the question. I am going to try to do light farming alone. How does one put a 700 lbs weight on top of a disc harrow?

And where do you get such a weight?

The total weight includeing the disc is about 700lbs. the concrete weight is about 200LBS. The concrete is a sidewalk section and with the loader and a chain one person can set it any place you want.

If you need a weight I'd go down to an automotive machine shop or a junk yard and see if they'll give or sell you cheap, a junk engine block. Engine blocks are fairly compact dead weight and they have lots of holes, cylinder and bolt holes, to secure them to whatever you're going to use them on. I've used cylinder heads, also.

I never thought about a block before. Do you know what a V-8 block weighs?

I don't know. I don't even know if the guys at the machine shop would know off the top of their heads. I do know that a small block Chevy will weigh a lot less than, say, an FE (390) Ford. I can hump a small block off the floor onto an engine stand but I ain't a gonna try it with the Ford! You can mix and match your weights once you can find out the difference. When I was a kid I hung out with dirt track racers. This was back in the day when most racing equipment was home made. There was one guy who couldn't keep the tail end of his car nailed down. He finally worked his way up to a 8v71 Detroit diesel crankshaft chained across the rear frame rails to get it to handle. He spent a day or two working his way up through various car and truck parts until he found the right weight to make it work.
